Free Music Notes for Love, Luther

Free Music Review: good and could have been better
Hit: 4 Stars

i was/is a big Luther Vandross fan. this collection has alot of his hits, but if I put it together I would have had a Live cd of Luther in the mid 80's or so. I liked his stuff mainly from 81-88. would have dug more rare stuff from Luther or just hearing a Jam Session with Luther and Marcus Miller and Nat Adderly Jr. nevertheless the Good stuff still holds up. Luther was So Soulful and you felt where he was coming from. i have almost all of his albums and this collection is worth picking up. brings back alot of Memorys and alot of Good times with hearing these songs that touched on alot of things. he was a Voice that captured so many feelings. RIP to One Bad SOul Brother.

Free Music Review: Essential, but not comprehensive
Hit: 3 Stars

"Love, Luther" covers most of the bases of defining Luther Vandross' career, but there are some obvious omissions his long-time fans would notice. There are an incredible seven of Luther's 26 top 10 singles missing -- "I'll Let You Slide," "She Won't Talk to Me," "I Really Didn't Mean It," "The Rush," "Sometimes It's Only Love," "Little Miracles (Happen Every Day)" and "Treat You Right." There is no excuse for a box set to leave off one hit song, much less one-fourth of an artist's top 10 catalog (particularly "Treat You Right," which was available only on the now-deleted "The Best of Luther Vandross: The Best of Love" release in 1989).

Quite frankly, I would have made this a five-disc set and used the full album versions of his most memorable songs (including the remastered versions from the "The Best of Love" set) for the first four discs and the final one for the "bonus" material. In light of the release of "The Ultimate Luther Vandross" in 2006, I would have left off songs like "Shine" and "Got You Home" and added songs like "Make Me a Believer," "You're the Sweetest One" and "My Sensitivity (Gets in the Way)."

Free Music Review: The Live, Rare & Unreleased Luther trax are just not on this set...
Hit: 3 Stars

It's very very sad that it took Luther's death for a comprehensive box set to be released. That said this one is a very mixed bag. There are two versions of this set; a small standard (will fit on your cd shelf) edition, and an oversized long box edition. First the good news: The presentation and booklet are near perfect. For me, it was worth it just for the box and booklet alone. Next there are seven true rarities included on this set. The box claims more than that, but the "Lady Is A Tramp" duet is previously available on Frank Sinatra's duets album and the new live mix of A House Is Not A Home is indeed better sounding than the original 2003 Radio City Music Hall cd, but not different otherwise. There are a few other extended versions etc., but nothing else truly rare. Was it worth it for just seven new trax? You betcha! But that brings us to the bad news ONLY 7 RARE CUTS ON A 4 CD BOX SET. Not near enough for his long suffering fans. Even if you give the set the benefit of the doubt and included every alt, extended, remixed version, and count things like Hot Butterfly, which I'll bet most fans already have (and which I'm very glad was in fact included here) we're still only talkin' like 13 or 14 items that aren't on Luther's standard discography!!! There should have been TONS of previously unreleased live trax and TONS of lesser known studio cuts and TONS of unreleased material. Come on now, we all know they exist!!! What about including "She's So Good To Me" from THE GOONIES soundtrack (even though luckily I already have that cut on a UK promo cd single)? What about more than just the single cut from Luther's first two albums on Cotillion Records (and again... thank goodness I already have them both)? There should have been an entire disc devoted to unreleased live material, an entire disc devoted to unreleased studio trax, an entire disc devoted to alt versions and remixes and then finally a disc of regular run of the mill album cuts that you could get just about anywhere. THAT'S WHAT THIS SET SHOULD HAVE BEEN!!! If this sounds like sour grapes, it's not. The set for all my complaints is a very nice overview collection, but seeing as how most fans have the vast majority of this material already, it seems like a huge missed opportunity to me. Still, this is better than nothing at all and I'm very happy that Luther finally gets the box set treatment. Or better yet, how 'bout a do over!!!

Free Music Review: Love Luther needs more Love!
Hit: 3 Stars

I agree with the other reviews. It's good for the average fan but not die-hards like me who know what the rare songs are like "the thrill I'm in" should have been included here and the liner lists that "there's only you" was previously unreleased. On CD maybe but I have the vinyl version of the song on the soundtrack to the movie "made in heaven". they should have included the remix to "I know" where he did completely new vocals and melody. Speaking of which, don't get excited about the alternate version of "Anyone who had a heart". It's lackluster. It's more like a rehersal. This doesn't even have his duet with Janet Jackson. I would have saved money if I had just downloaded the songs I don't already have and paid 99cents per song. It would've been less than the cost of this box set.

Free Music Review: How could they leave off.......
Hit: 5 Stars

........."Second Time Around" when he first performed it with his group "Luther." That is the best version of that song and the ending is PHENOMENAL!!! Luther really showed off his vocal skills back then before he made it big!!! If you listen to WHUR on Sunday nights, Kevin "Slow Jammin" James plays it on the ORIGINAl QUIET STORM all the time. Other than that, I love the CD and I love Luther and I miss him. Much love to Luther's mom!!!! I am a true Luther fan FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS, FOR LOVE!!!!
