Free Music Notes for Lyfe 268-192Free Music Review: A man who found his SOUL Hit: 4 StarsThis cd was turned on to me by my brother who just like LYFE had seen the inside of the jail walls. I think his testimony through music is very powerful and draws you in. He has a very dynamic and strong voice.
Free Music Review: Nothing Hypothetical Here, Lyfe is Good, No Doubt Hit: 4 StarsThis cd is amazing. I was surprised at how good it really is. The songs are about things that anyone who has experienced the hood life can relate to. Lyfe's voice is amazing and his soulful delivery really allows you to feel every song from start to finish. I also love how he connects all the songs in story format with his narrations. I thought that was a very clever way to construct the cd. This is really a must have for anyone who is looking for some REAL r&b music.
Free Music Review: Lyfe as you know it Hit: 5 StarsI would like to start out by saying, this is a great album track to track 1-15, and if you purchased or burned this cd subsequently listening to the singles,i'm sure you found out quickly that, Must be nice can be considered a filler, Not saying By any means that it is a terrible song, but you will later find out there are many songs that are simply fire!, after listening to this cd since August I have not found a song I will skip everytime I pop the cd in, Greedy,cry,26 years 17 days, stick up kid and smile are my favorites. This cd is a Biography on tape, going in order sharing his life experiences and if you have a pulse atleast one of these songs I'm sure you can relate to. Now I understand why this cd is not at the top of the charts, now I am only 18 so I wont give you a lame back in the day, this music just is not viewed like we viewed it back in the day speech, but I will say High record sells are due to the Persona and the flashiness and not the Talent of the singer. This is a proven fact, look at the top charts being bombarded by young, flashy average singers.I am a guy so when I pick up a cd and listen I dont care what the singer looks like, so I tend to stumble on great cds that gets no respect from most, this cd in My oppinion is deserving of a Grammy and an Oscar for the story lol. But seriously this guys the Hottest in the game in my oppinion, I know most will differ but thats just how the world is but understand in the words of the late great Tupac in Poetic Justice "Quite frankly my dear I dont give a f***" cause this is a Marocracy(Marcus is the Name, clever I know lol)so that means none of your opinions MATTER!!!! thank you very Much
Free Music Review: An R&B album that bridges gaps and promises potential. Hit: 4 StarsLyfe Jennings' album 268-192 has been, honestly, an underground R&B album for most of its time on the shelf, and finally, after two years, Lyfe has pushed himself into the mainstream. After performing as the opening act for several major tours, he finally got on the road to headline for himself, and carry such heavy-weight hitters to open for him such as Vivian Green and Goapele. As a quick side-note, let me just say that Lyfe knows how to rock a concert. He's the ultimate show-man, and has Kanye West-like potential for showmanship, but enough about this, onto the album.
For once, an R&B album isn't too hypocritical. One of the problems with the R&B genre is the hypocrisy so many artists fall into. Look at John Legend. John Legend has some of the most heartfelt soul songs written in decades, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest potential classics for rhythm and blues music, but sadly, much of his music simple contradicts itself. These same problems are found in artists such as Anthony Hamilton and Jaheim. Right in those few sentences, you've summed up almost all of the latest, up and coming R&B male artists. Sad, isn't it? That they're all so talented, and yet can't help but exploit that ghetto attitude and player mentality. You'd think they'd learn, when songs like "Charlene," or "Used To Love You" are their greatest hits, that they wouldn't bother going after street cred and making songs about pimping and keeping women in their place. R&B music inherently draws its power from vulnerability, and as of yet, seldom few male soul singers have found a balance between manhood and emotions. Finally, we've found the only other man able to do this outside of Musiq Soulchild. Lyfe Jennings comes to save the day. Lyfe doesn't try to pretend he's an angel. He's real about his past, being in prison, his life as a "Stick-Up Kid." His treatment of women in the past, but he sings about it in a self-reflective manner, and isn't afraid to show his vulnerable side either. "Cry" is one of the best songs on the album, and is one of the most open and personal tracks on here as well, but ultimately, this CD offers something for everyone.
The problem with R&B music, is to really appreciate most of it, you have to truly understand love and heartbreak. So much of the younger generation - teens - simply aren't on that level. Not just this generation, throughout history, it's just a fact, that youth often isn't in tune with love and heartbreak, and that's just the way it is. You often don't experience these things until later on in life, and as such, R&B only plays a supporting role to rap music in the eyes of the younger generation. What a tragedy, because R&B music is all about surviving the hardships of life, and is so often so personal and soothing to the soul. Here, however, Lyfe has managed to draw in the youth as much as he has traditional rhythm and blues followers. It was easy. All he did was allow himself to sing about more than just love, and when he DOES sing about love, he often allows himself to tie in other issues into the song, such as the exact conflict he himself is trying to balance on; the clash between manhood and vulnerability. By doing this, Lyfe brings in a much wider audience. On top of this, however, Lyfe has an incredible voice, and a great knack for tapping into wells of emotions that aren't often seen. 268-192, at first glance, looks like your run of the mill soul album, but it's more than that. It's the first step in a different direction for rhythm an blues music, and yet with all of the potential in his favor, Lyfe still has his faults.
A good deal of the actual music on the album, the melody and musicality, I should say, actually does sound a little too uninspired sometimes. It's an easy trap to fall into in this type of music, to simply go with what everyone expects and stick with what works, but it's the soul music that's really innovative that is really remembered. Some of Lyfe's songs show creativity like this, but others fall short, and end up sounding like a re-run of stereotypical soul music.
Nevertheless, the pros far outweigh the cons on this album, and Lyfe has certainly proved that he has the potential to go much farther in the future, and be a true innovator for the music. All we can do now is enjoy what he's given us, and hope for something more in the future.
