Free Music Review: The Phoenix Rises Again!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Lyfe has done it again!!!! It is so good to know that real talent still exist. I have to say that I am very disappointed that the music industry seems to be sleeping on this musical genius. Lyfe is bringing life back to music!! My favorite cut on the cd is The River,it reminds me of the old classic Sam Cooke song It's Been A Long Time Coming. My other favorites are Let's stay together and I'll always love you. I applaud the fact that his songs are about real life struggles and relationships and that turning your life around is possible. If you have not seen this man in concert you are missing out on a wonderful experience.

Free Music Review: Eh, it was cool
Hit: 3 Stars

Once again Lyfe takes listeners on a journey to hear what's going on in his world and as expected, there was a couple cuts that I continuously blasted.

Cons: He does a little bit of rhyming, but it's that simplistic rhyming where a rapper rhymes the FIRST word that makes sense, instead of trying to play around with multisyllabics. I wasn't feeling the guest appearances at all, especially from the people who did them. Lyfe is better off doing a cd alone. Although he did the type of socially conscious song I could see Tupac doing in a heartbeat (S.E.X.), I thought Lyfe remaking Tupac's "Keep Ya Head Up" was a huge mistake. His version was mediocre and there's no need to copycat when his unique sound is so outstanding. "Ghetto Superman" was a goofy song and could've been left out, and the song where he keeps comparing himself to Biggie just seemed groupie-ish to me. I'd say he reminds me more of Jaheim if I had to put him with someone, but what individual would want to cheer about being just like another man? Be you.

Pros: This man is so smooth without even trying to be. "Stingy" had more come-on lines than a little bit and all of them were slick. The man said he was jealous of his woman's clothes because they touch her more than he does. I had to grin at that one. I bought his cd solely for "S.E.X." because it's so refreshing for somebody to talk to these young girls who are so quick to give it up just to be in the "in" crowd. Coming from someone like Lyfe, I really do hope they listen. There were other tales of relationships, criminal life, and religion that made the cd thought-provoking. It's refreshing for a man to express how he feels about a woman, and NOT in a disrespectful way all the time. I'm burnt out on both sexes complaining with no merit. I think this dude is working with great potential to increase through the years. I love it when he takes risks with his voice, especially when he hits high notes because he seems too cool to do it and when you hear it, it's impressive.

Free Music Review: HOT!
Hit: 4 Stars

I could not wait for this CD to drop and it was well worth the wait! Lyfe is really saying something on this CD! I will be anxiously awaiting his next release.

Free Music Review: Lyfe Burns But The Music is Beautiful
Hit: 4 Stars

Lyfe Jennings sophomore release hasn't received the promotion this talented artist deserves. As a fan of his controversial lyrics, overly enriched voice, distinct passion, and troubled past I find his music to be the key to influencing those that need to hear his message necessary. There are always artist that are giving the divine calling to aid in the healing of souls as with the sophomore project "Phoenix" Mr. Jennings has permanently etched his self on that list. Similar to the first album entitled "268-192" he navigates you through the story of his life by introducing each song with his narration. On the new album there is more story telling giving the listener more insight to the song which is good the first time you listen to it but after that it become unnecessary and annoying. The cd starts off with an interesting up beat track called "Slow Down" whose lyrics I found confusing but catchy until I heard a group of children singing Jesus Swings. I was thrown off guard by the random hook but proceeded optimistically through the album only to find that it was phenomenal. My personal favorites are "Goodbye" which captures the awkward state of doubt and confusion at the very end of a relationship and "River" which serves as a lyrical journey through Lyfes mind down his troubled past. I've found that this mans lyrics are remarkable and could stand alone as poetry. I was impressed with the overall composition of this sophomore release and yet I wasn't surprised. Lyfe is a natural and true artist and this generation needs him, however I fear that his artistry won't be appreciated the way that it deserves until a later time in history. This man is changing the face of music before our eyes but in the age of southern crunk, overly animated sexual lyrics, and celebrity stunting, we take little notice. The story behind the "Phoenix" is that in the world of mythology a bird in Egypt lived in the desert for over 400 years and then consumed itself by fire, later to rise renewed from its ashes. Could Lyfe be predicting his own prophecy?

Rating: 9/10

Free Music Review: Nice but LYFE TALKS TOO MUCH!!! Missing 'Freeze' w/L.L. Cool J.!!
Hit: 4 Stars

Lyfe Jennings' 'The Phoenix' (even questionable CD cover art!! whew..really bad!) is good followup to his debut, but it would've been better if he kept the TALKING interludes down to a minimum. After the first 2-3, they get REAL OLD (how many times can one listen to "yeah man, and then I did, and this is what happened, and so & so, Blah, Blah...BLAH..?"). There's a total of 12 interludes (yes 12!!) on this CD, one after each track, and I found myself using the skip button too often.
With that in mind, I decided to remaster 'The Phoenix', and cut out most of those nagging interludes, and even added a cool BONUS TRACK ('Freeze' w/L.L.Cool J), which was a clever way to end the CD...too bad the record company didn't think of this. At any rate, Lyfe blew me away with 'Goodbye', and there are a number of songs ready to be released as singles. If you're a Lyfe Jennings fan, get this CD asap.
