Free Music Notes for It's Not Big It's LargeFree Music Review: Lyle sounds good on this disc Hit: 5 Stars
The songs on this disc are diverse in theme and sound. My favorite track is "Tickle Toe" It is very upbeat. I like the trumpet playing by Gary Grant on this first cut very much. "Don't Cry A Tear" is a beautiful song. The acoustic guitar playing is so heartfelt and touching. "I Will Rise Up" is another good track. Lyle sounds tough and rugged on this track. I love the strong beat in this song. "All Down Hill From Here" and "Make me Happy" are two uptempo tracks about enjoying life. The fiddle playing by Stuart Duncan is so good on this song. Matt Rollins infuses these tracks with a vitality with his piano playing. "Aint No More Cane" and "This Travelling Around" are two tracks about how weary and tough life can be. "South Texas Girl" is a nice tribute to the beauty of Lyle's home state. Lyle sounds so laid back and cool. The track "No Big Deal" is great too. The piano playing accompanies his vocals well here. I enjoyed every track on this disc.
Free Music Review: Back to form for Lyle Lovett and his outsanding band Hit: 5 Stars
Ever since his award winning Road to Ensenada, it seems that Lyle has struggled to regain that form. There was his excellent, Step Inside this House, but it was a selection of covers, not originals. With this new collection of songs, Lovett is back almost to the top of his form, with his large band, and surrounded by his usual group of brilliant musicians, among whom both Victor Krauss (brother of Allison Krauss) and Russ Kunkel stand out.
The songs are original, beautifully sung and brilliantly played. If Lyle could get awards for production and musicianship, this CD would sweep the polls.
The DVD is a huge bonus, with cinema verite videos of Lyle and his fellow musicians 'rehearsing' several tracks. The video as a form has been all but lost, but here, Lyle retrieves the form by making mini-documentaries around a group of the songs. Wonderful stuff, beautifully shot and edited.
Highly recommended all round!
Free Music Review: It's a great album Hit: 5 Stars
This album is done with so much devotion. The first track reminds of listening to a Lawrence Welk big band tune, only with a dose of Amphetamines. It's a good pre 8 hour work day song. There is such a sweetness to this album. Lyle is hard to pin down as far as stating a genre for his music. This album has a spiritual tone also. This never hurts. I don't favor country music in any way, but even his song about Indiana which definitely has a country sound, sort of makes me want to wear cowboy boots and tap my foot to the beat. By listening to the sound of the entire album, he has picked great musicians to accompany him. I am proud to say I own this album. You have to get it. You will have no regrets.
Free Music Review: Perfection Hit: 5 Stars
This is the best Lyle has ever done. The gift of the dvd was precious. What a wonderful treat to see, in South Texas Girl, clips from his home movies - isn't that James Gilmer walking across the screen in one of the earlier clips of Lyle, when his hair was really big? I begin each day at work with Ain't No More Cane and S Texas Girl has become my favorite of all his songs. This album, even after 2? years, has not gotten boring or tiresome. I think it's his finest to date.
The minor problem I have with the album is the curious duplication of Up In Indiana - but he's done the same thing on Natural Forces with Pantry. Wonder why? Would have liked one more new song.
Free Music Review: Gotta Love Lovett Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of Lyle Lovett for several years.... while I'll admit this is not a revolutionary (sound wise) cd, it's still great. I felt that the music is very similar to other tracks he's laid down, but that doesn't mean it's not worth listening to. Lovett's style is a blend of so many influences, it's unmatchable. This cd is a lot like his last, My Baby Don't Tolerate, and reminds me of one of his earlier cds, Joshua Judges Ruth. I don't think you'll hear a brand new ground breaking style, but if you're a fan already, you'll enjoy listening. It's classic Lyle Lovett!
