Free Music Review: HoHum
Hit: 3 Stars

I purchased a copy of this album yesterday and was really looking forward to enjoying what others have described as quite a listening experience. First of all, let me state that I do live recording work on location. I have a lot of experience in selecting certain microphones and know how to mix properly and get the right balance on the work I do.

This recording is so compressed and limited that to me, most of the real thrill of a "large" band has been removed. I suppose that the engineers used the "Heinz 57" technique where they close-mic'ed everything and then put the compressor on stun to get the dynamics under their lid. That is a shame, really, since the real joy of hearing a BIG BAND or as the title infers, "Large" Band is experiencing the dynamics!

Anyway! If the band was that well rehearsed, why ruin an otherwise great opportunity to capture a supreme moment?

BTW, listen to the drums. No real dynamics left at all, because they compressed the hell out of what they recorded.

Too bad!

I think I need to listen to this a little more, but I found myself getting bored with, and skipping, tracks a little too often. Too many of them are repetitive, a al "Private Conversation", except they don't have that energy and aren't as catchy. They're also slow. Slow + repetitive = not all that interesting (unless maybe you want to meditate to it).

"Up in Indiana" at least has some energy. "South Texas Girl" is really good once you really hear it, and it's still a pretty good album, but musically it feels a little muzak-ish.

Addendum: Okay, it gets better the more you listen to it. Both variants of "I Will Rise Up" are pretty effective.

It's still 3 on a good day, though. I miss the less-produced, less-pop Lyle.

Free Music Review: Not as Large as it purportsto be
Hit: 3 Stars

I'm a fan of Lyle Lovett and of big (not just large) bands, so I was very excited about this CD. The first cut, Tickle Toe, fits the title perfectly. It is a cookin' tune with hot horns and a feel that only Lyle's style can give it. So, I bought it; then realized that the rest of the tunes do NOT feature the Large Band at all. The horns are not even on most of the cuts. Granted, I did check out the previews on the Amazon site so I should have known, but I assumed that the cuts were from the "quieter" sections of the songs. As it turned out, the whole cut was the same, sans Large Band. So, while this is very good Lyle Lovett, the CD is not as large as it purports to be.

Free Music Review: WHY BIG BAND??
Hit: 3 Stars

Why does he call this call CD "His Large Band" when only one song
( Tickle Toe ) has this band on it. The rest of this CD is mellow acoustic type of ballads which is ok if this is what you're looking
for. I don't get where he was coming from on this. I only write this
because I don't want anybody else to be misguided as I was.

Free Music Review: Another good CD from Lyle
Hit: 3 Stars

Some good to great songs--and some dirges as well. I'd say it's about 50/50. If you are a Lyle fan it's a must. He writes the best darned lyrics period. I recommend it.
