Free Music Notes for Last RebelFree Music Review: As Good Of A Skynyrd Album As You'll Ever Find
I must first start off by mentioning that I'm no casual Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. No band has or ever will touch Skynyrd when it comes to great gut level honest lyrics and cool guitar licks (at least in my book.) This album was so underappreciated and ignored by many. It is just proof that what's popular ain't always what is good. This ten song set starts off with the boogie track Good Lovin's Hard To Find. It was the first radio single off of the album and while it was good, it wasn't the best choice. Good Lovin's Hard To Find was your standard four minutes or less radio single that definitely would remind you of I Know A Little from earlier Skynyrd. The wisest choice for a lead off cut for radio would have been the title song The Last Rebel. This song is great. It had the dramatic heartfelt mood of Simple Man and Tuesday's Gone all the while definitely not an attempt to duplicate the earlier songs. That is where this band shines too. When they launch out into the deep and do a song that is clearly their own, (not an attempt to write songs that sound like early Skynyrd material) Skynyrd cast their own shadow. This is evident with songs like South Of Heaven and Born To Run as well. South Of Heaven has a dark feel to it lyrically and musically is reminiscent of Cry For The Bad Man. A very cool song that never made it to the band's set list at live shows. Born To Run was a great song musically and lyrically. Lots of slide guitar (not Free Bird esque though) and a jam at the end that let Billy Powell show off on the piano a little. The guitar parts in the jam were good, but they weren't on the level with Free Bird. Other great songs include Best Things In Life (co written with Cinderella's frontman Tom Keifer,) One Thing (good spitfire rockin' tune,) and Outta Hell In My Dodge (southern rock song personified.) One that really stands out is Kiss Your Freedom Goodbye. It has a great chorus and is a song that you could imagine hearing Ronnie Van Zant sing. More of the same as I mentioned before...the honest heartfelt lyrics and more cool guitar riffs. The band included on this set a couple of ballads that were notworthy. The first I'll mention was Love Don't Always Come Easy which had an acompanying video that was aired on country music vido channels. This song isn't bad, but it is probably my least favorite on the album. I thought it lyrically was too much like any other country song you might hear and hopefully it showed the band that they need go with what brought them to the dance: Rock N' Roll of course. The other ballad was a song called Can't Take That Away that would have been a better choice for country airplay. More of the honest lyrics and a great chorus carry this song. I still sing along to this one when I hear it. Nothing like a song that encourages the listener to hold on to what they beleive. This is definitely the best post Ronnie Van Zant Skynyrd album yet. Don't let negative reviews by casual fans deter you from this one. From start to finish, this album is excellent. Give it a spin and turn your friends on to it.
