Free Music Notes for Nuthin' FancyFree Music Review: Underappreciated classic Hit: 5 Stars
Much as been made of the pressure applied by MCA for a quick turnaround album following LS's hit "Second Helping" (even Ronnie Van Zandt made the point), yet it doesn't seem to have hurt the band's ability to put out consistently compelling music. While "Saturday Night Special" may not be a match for "Sweet Home Alabama" as a signature track, this product has depth. "The Railroad Song" would do Jimmie Rodgers proud and "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller" is as good an uptempo honky-tonker as any Southern Rock band played. Two tracks match Skynyrd's best work, though: "On the Hunt" is hard and gritty - with Van Zandt's vocals achingly plaintive - and "Am I Losing" is among the group's most emotional and evocative pieces, certainly on a par with "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe," and also contains one masterful lick near the end. The sound may not be as polished as it was on "Pronounced" and "Second Helping," but there is a raw spontaneity on this album which makes it a "must" for any LS or Southern Rock fan.
Free Music Review: One Of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Best Hit: 5 Stars
NUTHIN' FANCY is in a tie with SECOND HELPING, STREET SURVIVORS, ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, the boxed set, THE ESSENTIAL LYNYRD SKYNYRD, GIMME BACK MY BULLETS, PRONOUNCED, FREEBIRD: THE MOVIE, ALL-TIME GREATEST HITS, GOLD & PLATINUM, and SKYNYRD'S FIRST for the group's best album. The album opens with "Saturday Night Special", a song that probably did more for gun control than any Sarah Brady speech ever could. Other gems include the riff-rockers "On The Hunt", which describes for me how I've sometimes felt when I've seen old friends from school at the mall; "I'm A Country Boy", which extols the values of rural living; and "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller", which emphasizes that music is good for the soul. Another song here that means a lot to me is "Am I Losin'", which cuts to the heart of how some fellow alumni have treated me differently since I prioritized my physical-fitness goals above attending food-related functions at my old school. This is an essential Lynyrd Skynyrd purchase, along with the other seven aforementioned albums.
Free Music Review: Lynyrd Skynyrd "Nuthin' Fancy" Another Skynyrd Classic!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Again, another classic album cd from the "original" Lynyrd Skynyrd Band. This one contains the songs: "Saturday Night Special", "Cheatin'Woman", "Railroad Song" (about Jimmie Rodgers & Merle Haggard), "I'm a Country Boy", "On the Hunt", "Am I Losin" (this was written at Graceland in Memphis, Elvis had invited them over, after they had broken Elvis's attendance record for a concert in Memphis),"Made in the Shade" (inspired by Mr.Shorty Medlocke - Ricky Medlocke's Granddad), "Whiskey Rock & Roller", plus two bonus "live" songs: "Railroad Song", and "On the Hunt".
The last time I was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Atlanta, there was a Gold Record of this album hanging on the wall there.
This is a classic, and another "must-have" for any Lynyrd Skynyrd fan. Thanks, and may God Bless!!!
Free Music Review: A Diamond in the Rough. Hit: 5 Stars
This is probably my personal favorite of all the Skynyrd studio albums. They just sound good. The combination of guitars, vocals, piano, the rock solid rhythm section, and the occasional Al Kooper backin vocal and keyboard work is simply amazing. Everything comes together for a bluesy southern flavored album. It's got a similar feeling and atmosphere to the Rolling Stones Exile On Mainstreet. The only problem with Nuthin Fancy is that there isn't enough of it. The album contains only 8 songs because Skynyrd was on the road constantly and had very little time to work on new material. Regardless, Nuthin Fancy is a great album. I recommend it to any fan of blues-rock music.
