Wow, Lynyrd Skynyrd certainly came out of nowhere with a bang! A debut album that contains a MASSIVELY huge hit, along with two other ballady type "soft rocker anthems", and just for fun, a short and sweet hard boogie rocker ("Gimme Three Steps") to confirm they were, in fact, TOTAL southern rock right behind the Allman Brothers in terms of popularity. So the album has a total of 4 hits. That's how you make a statement!
One of the most underrated songs is actually "Poison Whiskey" with its energetic and forceful tone in the chorus. Love the vocals on that one. "I Ain't the One" has picked up popular steam in recent years. Before 10 years ago or so, we never would have heard this song on the radio. Now people wanna hear it. "Things Goin' On" is just pure southern rock catchiness with its tasty instrumental parts and melodic singing sections.
Overall, one great album that certainly is a masterpiece.
Free Music Review: Excellent Hit: 5 Stars
This is an incredible album. There is no reasonable explanation to give this anything but 5 stars. Which suggests that if this is the yardstick for a 5 star album, the bar has indeed been set very high. Some other albums that are worthy of 5 stars would be Pink Floyd's The Wall, Led Zeppelin IV, and Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell.
If you think about the caliber of these albums you will reach the same conclusion that I have; there are far too many 5 star albums here. Most of what people are 5 staring should in reality be 4 stars.
One thing I don't care for on this reissue is the inclusion of the "bonus tracks". This is true of most reissues it seems. Don't get me wrong re-mastering an album is great but I'm a stickler for authenticity. I want to hear the album as I remember hearing it back when it first came out. Added extra cut's kind of ruins things here. More content does not equal better.
Free Music Review: Skynyrd = Southern Zeppelin? Hit: 5 Stars
This Great Band has Been called the "Sounthern Version of Led Zeppelin" I think this means that they were both Revolutionaries... Either way, I will compare this album to Led Zeppelin... First, They are both in Fact... Great If you like Led Zeppelin and/or like country, you will probably like this...This album is alot like Zep's first in that it is alot of the same music... Zep's First was Bluesey... This is Rock with a Twang... But it just sounds Right, and they hit the right spot and Stay there... Freebird is basically Skynyrd's Version of Stairway to Heaven, not that they sound alike at all... but, they are alike in that they are both the best thing ever to come from their respecting bands, and they are both over 8min, but the cool thing is... YOU JUST DONT CARE! Highly Reccomend this and all Skynyrd Albums... Rock on 10/10, A+, 0 things bad... whatever!

This album cd was produced by the "Yankee Slicker" himself, Al Kooper, the MCA talent scout, who discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd performing on Peachtree Street, in downtown Atlanta, in the very early 1970's. This is a great cd, and a "must-have" for any serious Skynyrd fan, and I'm a fan to the "bone". Buy one, and enjoy it. It's good from beginning to end!!!
Free Music Review: From an old 5 Stars
........ who has been with Skynyrd from the beginning. Between '73 and '75 I saw them live twice in San Diego, while I was still in the Navy, and 3 or 4 times since then, both the original group and the rebuilt one. If I had to describe the authenticity, and brute HONESTY of this band, I would simply quote something Ronnie said in an interview way back when. The interviewer asked him why he always performed bare-foot on stage, while performing. His reply was awesome: "Because I want to feel the stage BURN under my feet. I need to feel the HEAT!", or words very similar to that (the interview was a long time ago). There was not an ounce of fake in the man, anywhere, nor in his band. Remember the man, and save a thought for Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie, Leon, Billy, Allan, and Hughie, also. Don't ever forget Hughie. Thanks for your attention.......
