On PRONOUNCED LEHN'-NERD SKIN'-NERD', Lynyrd Skynyrd break out of the gate with a bang. The song "Simple Man" tells us to stick to our roots; "Gimme Three Steps" describes a guy narrowly escaping a fight with his life; "Poison Whiskey" warns of the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption; and "Free Bird" and "Tuesday's Gone" speak on the surface of leaving a lover, but deep down really one's whole life, behind. Those two songs have inspired me to skip food-related reunions at my old school. Overall, this is one of the most important Southern rock records ever, along with Skynyrd's own SECOND HELPING, STREET SURVIVORS, and ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, the Allman Brothers Band's AT FILLMORE EAST, EAT A PEACH, and BROTHERS AND SISTERS, and the Outlaws' first three albums, BEST OF THE OUTLAWS: GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES, and BRING IT BACK ALIVE.
Free Music Review: Southern Greatness Hit: 5 Stars
This is the best Rock band ever to come out of the South.
Ever.
Better than the Allman's and Marshall Tucker.
Better than bands like the Eagles, Stones and old Aerosmith with their quasi-southern rock type songs and don't get me wrong those are great bands. No, original Skynyrd was true classic Southern rock with blues, gospel, country and Zeppelin style guitar blended into one.
The original Skynyrd was the real deal and the best was the first. "Freebird" is a classic rock masterpiece and "Tuesday's Gone" is also great. Check out also "Mississippi Kid", very Southern outlaw in your face stuff.
My favorite though is "Simple Man" and although slow the words and song stand out as being larger than life.
That song, in my opinion, is greatness.
Free Music Review: Southern Rock that everyone, even Neil, loved Hit: 5 Stars
A Southern Man needs this kind of music. I heard it back when they played for free at Georgia Tech in '72. I saw them back up the Who's Quadrophenia Tour at the Omni in Atlanta - Skynyrd was a worthy successor to a generation of great rockers even when they took the stage first. Their music had soul, the kind that you just don't hear on the radio these days. If you want a taste of something similar and maybe a little bit rawer but just as good, check out the Drive-By Trucker's Decoration Day. And I don't get anything for that referral except the pleasure of the music being spread around. Long Live Skynyrd, they surely did create music that I still love to play to this day (and please, don't scream FreeBird at some half-crap band that doesn't hold a candle to these guys...even in fun it's disrespectful to these guys).
Free Music Review: Timeless,Beautiful,Heartfelt, did I miss anything??? Hit: 5 Stars
Words cannot explain just how amazing this album is.This is an album you can definitly listen to straight thru. All the way from the wailing opening melody of "Tuesday's Gone" to the souther fried slide-guitar offerings of "Freebird",Skynyrd shows off it's unprecedented musicianship with its triple guitar line as well as Ronnie's honest and human lyrics, which I think anyone can relate to even to this day.No other rock n roll band could maintain its cocky swagger and at the same time remain as true as Skynyrd did to their roots. If you need a break from the furious fretwork of Eddie,Joe,Jimmy,or Angus,or if you are simply looking for timeless, honest, quality rock n roll music, then Skynyrd is the band you're looking for.All of their albums up to Street Survivors is a must have.
Long live Ronnie.
Free Music Review: Why didn't I discover this sooner? Hit: 5 Stars
I'm just getting into Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I'm starting to love their first album, (Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd). I know I should have listened to this sooner, but still, I'm glad I found this album. Every song on this debut album is a scrumptious feast for my ears. "Free Bird," pretty much my top favorite song on this album, is flawless. "Tuesday's Gone," "Simple Man," and "Things Goin' On" are just plain brilliant. "Mississippi Kid" and "Poison Kid" are fun to listen to. The rest of the songs are great, although "I Ain't The One" is pretty bland in my opinion.
(Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd) is a classic, and it should remain a classic. And even though I'm not a big fan of Southern Rock in general, I might change my mind later on in the future.
