Free Music Notes for Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album
Free Music Review: This is not "Skynyrd's First & Last", This is Skynryd's "First & Complete" 17 track Studio Recording = Great Southern Rock!!!!

Although I have been a "die-hard", loyal, Skynryd fan, ever since they came out, back in the early 1970's, I had the impression that this "First" Album, would be kind of "amateur-ist", and "raw & unpolished". I have every album they have realeased, from "Pronounced" to "God + Guns". Anyway, I got to looking at this one, and saw it was the "complete", 17 track, first album recorded by Skynyrd, so I finally bought one. Wow, I was surprised, it is not "amateur-ist", raw, or unpolished at all. All those years/months spent at the "hell house" writing songs, and praticing had really payed off. This is a Great Album CD!!! The liner notes give a great history of this recording session, and it includes some photos, taken at Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
At this time, Rickey Medlocke (Founding Member & Former Lead Singer of Blackfoot), was a member of Skynyrd, and also Bob Burns (Their Original Drummer) was a band member.
On this cd, Rickey Medlocke sings lead vocals on the songs: "The Seasons", "You Run Around",and "Ain't Too Proud to Pray".
Rickey Medlocke rejoined Skynyrd again back around 1997, when Skynyrd recruited him as a guitar player, for their album, entitled "Twenty", to commenorate the 20th anniversary of the Original Lynyrd Skynryd Band's plane crash, that killed Founding Member, Singer-Songwriter, Ronnie Van Zant, Guitar player Steve Gaines, and back-up singer Cassie Gaines, and road manager Dean Kilpatrick. Rickey is still with Lynyrd Skynyrd today.
Although most of these songs were written by the late/great Ronnie, Ed King,Gary Rossington, & the late/great Allen Collins, some of these songs were actually written by Rickey Medlocke. Some were co-written by Rickey & Ronnie. Plus, you get Greg T. Walker (bass player & founding member of Blackfoot), playing bass guitar on some of these songs. Skynyd & Blackfoot were always close, they all grew up in the same neighborhood, down in Jacksonville, Florida.

Last, but more than a quarter of a century passed between the 1971/'72 sessions that produced these germinating tracks and their full appearance. Skynyrd's First: The Muscle Shoals Album documents a group of young musicians finding their footing, but by no means is it an amateurish affair. While ongoing personnel shifts are in evidence (only Ronnie Van Zant, Albert Collins, and Gary Rossington from the classic lineup appear throughout), the playing and writing is surprisingly tight. It's easy to see why veteran session man Jimmy Johnson, the producer of the sessions, insisted: "I had never heard a band that were that well rehearsed and had their songs together." The excellent liner notes make this package all the more appealing to Lynyrd loyalists. --Steven Stolder
