Free Music Notes for The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd [2-CD SET]

Free Music Review: ESSENTIAL
Hit: 5 Stars

The title says it all. This is and essential album for any classic rock fan even if you're not really into skynyrd because you will be after listening to this a few times. The only thing it's missing is "Don't Ask Me No Questions." But other than that, it is the best collection of skynyrd songs that they have released.
"Sweet Home Alabama": Do I even need to say anything; one of the greatest songs ever written
"I Ain't the One": Great guitar solos
"Was I Right or Wrong": you were definetely right
"Gimme Three Steps": just a great ... song; the lead guitar fills complete the song
"Workin for MCA": Raw, real, classic skynyrd song
"Simple Man": Maybe the most underrated song ever written; at least it's used in Chevy Truck commercials
"Swamp Music": The real sound of the south
"The Ballad of Cutis Loew": What a song; can't say much more
"Saturday Night Special": Best song about a gun ever written
"Mr. Banker": This song slows it down a bit, get rid of the drums and bass and just let those guitars wail
"Comin' Home": The change of pace in this song highlights its greatness
"Call Me The Breeze": In my mind, one of the best song's ever written; Amazing guitar solo followed by an equally great piano solo. A must-learn for all guitar players
"Free Bird": The Greatest song ever written, no doubt about it
"What's Your Name": A pure classic; nutin' fancy about it; wouldn't be the same without the horns

"Whisky Rock-A-Roller (Live)": personally, my favorite song; one step up from the original
"Tuesday's Gone": Another underrated song; when the strings come in at the end of the piano solo... It's beautiful
"Double Trouble": You better believe it
"I know a Little": Amazing guitar work
"Four Walls of Raiford": Closin' in on me, doin' 3-5 hard labor for armed robbery; it's incredible how two guitars can come together to form such a great song
"I never Dreamed" just a great song
"Gimme Back My Bullets (Live)": I'd give him back his bullets if I were you
"You Got That Right": another underrated song; The southern accents really appear on this incredible track
"All I can do is write about it" Well, we're glad you did
"That Smell": The greatest guitar work of any song ever; four guitar solos cap off this song that shows how how good these guys really are
"Free Bird (Live)": What the only thing better than Free Bird? Free Bird live

Free Music Review: Ever Heard Of New Material, Guys?
Hit: 1 Stars

Yet another album in the expanding library of Lynyrd Skynyrd compilations, this one is no more "Essential" than the other fifty or so. If you have all of the original studio albums, at least one disc of "rarities", and one live set, that's all the Skynyrd you need.
Nothing makes this compilation special, much less "Essential." Lynyrd Skynyrd's disappointing habit of releasing disc after disc of live, and/or best-of albums has plagued their comeback since the unfortunate fatal plane crash in 1977 that killed legendary lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and back-up vocalist Cassie, and personal manager Dean Kilpatrick. The band's comeback could have been capable of so much more, but the bombardment of the same songs over and over ruined any chance of reviving their spark.
When you see this compilation in the record store, keep digging for something better.

This 2cd set has all the well known hits and some great rarities along with well written liner notes that detail the long rise of the music and the band. For anyone that likes Lynyrd Skynyrd's music enough to buy one cd, this is all you need to appreciate the talent. for diehard fans I know you all ready own it. Plus they remembered to include "Tuesday's Gone", "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" and both great versions of "Free Bird" on one collection.

Free Music Review: All The Skynyrd You Need
Hit: 5 Stars

As great a band as Lynyrd Skynyrd (pre-plane crash) was, this one collection actually manages to included virtually anything that all but the most devoted of fans will ever need to hear. The Ronnie Van Zandt era lasted for 5 studio albums, 1 live album, and a later release ("First and...Last") consisting of studio recordings that predate "Pronounced...", the "official" first album. "Pronounced..." was very strong, the second ("Second Helping") and sixth ("Street Survivors") albums were flat-out great, the third ("Nuthin' Fancy") and fourth ("Gimme Back My Bullets") albums were, frankly, uninspired, and the posthumous release "First and...Last" was a nice snapshot of a band that was, at that point, still searching for their sound. The fact is, though, that all of Skynyrd's truly top notch songs can be found on this 2 CD set, "The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd". If you haven't already started your Skynyrd collection, this one will do all by itself. Then, if you're still hungry for more, you can go for the live fifth album ("One More From The Road"). After that, picking up these various pre-crash studio albums will only get you the leftovers, scraps that do not hold up to the standard of the material on this collection. And there's no need to even bother with the post-Ronnie Van Zandt albums.

Free Music Review: Skynyrd is better than you'll ever guess
Hit: 5 Stars

Even if you aren't a Southerner, Skynyrd will still move you. This essential set contains a well-chosen set of songs, not just the band's most successful hits. First of all, you'll get all the classics, but you'll also get some of the hidden gems, such as "Was I Right or Wrong?" and the orignial version of "Comin' Home", great tunes recorded during Skynyrd's first studio session in Muscle Schoals, Alabama with the "Swampers" production crew (the location referenced in "Sweet Home Alabama" -- "Now Muscle Schoals got the Swampers, and they're known to pick a song or two..."). You will also find two versions of "Free Bird," the classic studio version and the amazing live version, which contains a beautiful piano part.

If you could buy only one Skynyrd album, buy this one.
