This album pleasantly surprised me. Although I have always liked Skynyrd, I have never been a big fan of Southern Rock. Thus, I approached this collection with less than full optimism, thinking it might not be that good. I was wrong. This is an excellent retrospective. Indeed, this is perhaps the best non-boxed-set "best of" collection that I have ever come across, in terms of thoroughness and song selection. Truly "The Essential Lynyrd Skynyrd". Almost every Skynyrd song that a casual fan could ever want is included in this set. Classics like Free Bird (studio and live versions), Tuesday's Gone, Sweet Home Alabama, That Smell, and many others are all in this set. Also included are awesome album tracks like The Ballad of Curtis Loew, Call Me The Breeze, and Was I Right Or Wrong (which, along with a few other songs on here, shows Ronnie Van Zant's oft-neglected pathos-inspiring songwriting abilities) among others. Diehard Skynyrd fans will even pleased with this set, which offers several live takes, original and alternate demos, and some very nice linear notes. This is a must own album for any Southern Rock or Lynyrd Skynyrd fan.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's music is so pure and Ronnie Van Zandt's writing is so heartfelt. They are the BEST band there ever was, in my opinion! If you are a true Skynyrd fan or just a casual listener...BUY these CDs! Some songs you can't help but dance to, others really make you think, others just plain make you want to cry. Essential?? YES!!!

Seems like all LS puts out now is greatest hits albums, and you know its got old. But this is the best LS album to get for the money. It's got their hottest hits and it's the old stuff(the good old stuff). I'm glad to see the remaining members carry on the band, but enough is enough, quit putting out reycled material. Put out some new stuff guys. Seen you on Letterman one night and loved you, but somethings got to give, you've done more repeat albums than KISS and that's bad off !!! I love KISS too, but, I'm sick of ordering any stuff from them with the same old material. You men have got good heads on your shoulders , and I know you got it in you to come up with good songs. Whether or not it sounds like your old stuff shouldn't matter as long as it's good. Folks, this is the cheapest I've seen this CD anywhere. This is good old southern rock at its best. Lynrd Skynrd gives you a taste of Blues "Tuesday's Gone", Blues Rock "That Smell", and just good old Rock-N-Roll music. "Free Bird" is one of the best selling songs in the world, and a hard rock favorite, Sweet Home Alabama inspires me, I'm proud of my Southern Heritage and listening to that song makes me think of days that are- days to come- and days gone by. Swamp music is killer, heck, the whole album is. There are not enough words to describe how I feel about this band, And if you're a die hard Skynrd fan this double CD is right for you !!!
