With all the press and hype surrounding this album its tempting to pretend to not like it... just to be different. What a mistake that would be. This young woman is about to take the world by storm. Remains to be seen if the american pop-culture zombies will have the musical context to understand this album. I think a good steeping in hip-hop, dancehall and their kin is almost a necessity to fully appreciate where this disc is coming from. Even on a superficial/uninitiated level Arular is very catchy and an inspection of the lyrics (which thankfully are included) reveals a depth that one has reason to not expect from "popular music." Overall I think this is the best album of its genre (whatever that is exactly) to come out in quite some time. My only complaint is that many who were exposed to M.I.A. via Diplo's "piracy funds terrorism" will not hear a lot of new material, only new riddims (if you will) on most tracks. After such a delay in the release of the album I would have liked to hear a little more new material. (though in all fairness the delay was not the fault of the artist.) One more thing... play this disc for a friend that has not yet been exposed and just watch their excitement. M.I.A. has offered up something that a lot of people have been waiting for (whether they knew it or not.)
