As a hip-hop junkie, I'm always on the lookout for creative artists that stand out from the pack. Let's view the genre as a cabinet full of hard drugs. Most of them in there provide a decent high, but you've felt the same effects time and time before, and quite frankly, they're beginning to bore you. 'Mm... Food?' to me, then, is some new type of miracle wonder drug. Stunningly creative and incredibly inspired, injecting this into your vei-, erm, listening to this is a requirement for any fanatic of the genre.
'MM... Food?' features skits, and automatically you'd assume that they'd be skip-worthy material (I mean, skits? Who listens to those more than once?). Not here. Sampling old school film and television sound clips, the production found on them is just so damn intriguing that you can't help but listen. The great thing about them is how they flow perfectly with the album, and follow the mood - instead of disrupting it.
That basically describes 'Mm... Food?' as a whole - it's just so damned fresh and original that you can't help but listen to it the whole way through every time. MF Doom even took the creative route with the song titles and lyrics. Sure, he discusses real topics, from the ladies to friends to snitches, but they all follow a food theme (hence the album's title).
There's a reason the underground hip-hop scene has been cherishing 'Mm... Food?' for years, and you owe it to yourself to finally find out why. This is one delicious meal.
