Free Music Review: Ups, downs, and in-betweens

While I have to say that I was totally overwhelmed by the type of music heard here, the album was a lot more than I had expected. Like another reviewer, I first heard this band on late-night TV, and listening to the album itself made the music sound better. It has less electronic than I thought it would when I read the overview (when I think of electronica I think of more than 4 x 4 beats or a little electronic spinning), and is more of an alternative offspring than I wanted. Still, that did not bother me all-that-much.
Off the top, I noticed how the album does not have a constant flow and normally that is bothersome. At first, it actually impacted the way I saw the music, but more plays showed me that the album might be a little out-of-order but that the music was still good. It also jumps around soundwise a lot - in some places it has an older feel and there are nu-er feels in others, with the band trying to span different types of sound while not being boring. In some places that impacted me on the style front, with the type of music not really settling well on me. Still, that is more of a personal opinion and not a fair assessment of the band.
Should you buy the album? Well, I think the album is good in places but I really would not have purchased the album as a whole. I like digital downloads and the album falls in that realm for me. That said, if you are a CD collector or just want to try out something new, this isn't bad. It has a nice upside, some downsides, and a bit of in-between.
