Free Music Review: Sounds great, but can't beat the classic Hit: 4 Stars
How many time can you redo Tubular Bells? Let me count the ways: 1973 - The classic 1975 - The orchestral version 1980 - The live version (Exposed) 1981 - The rare Ray Janos remix (Epic/Virgin PE 34116) 1992 - Tubular Bells 2 - lively remake, still love it 1998 - Tubular Bells 3 - a sonic dismembermentThe sound quality is muchly improved and indeed Mike did try to keep it to the original as much as possible, even though some of the changes are rather obvious. The use of John Cleese was quite clever but could have been a little louder. I did not like though how the caveman was performed. Adding his sister Sally made it more campy than scary. All in all though, it is a must buy and need to add it to your Mike Oldfield collection. Its good to have Warner bring his music back to the U.S. (about time!) Now Mike, bring us "Hergest Ridge 2004" and put an end to the controversy on which version is better.
Free Music Review: picky picky picky Hit: 4 Stars
I personally would like to have 1% of Mike Oldfield's talent, how many people realize how much time and effort go into the concerts and albums that Mike does. All you wannabees who like to tear apart Mike, could you do it any better? Mike Oldfield is one of the last remaining musicians that puts his heart into his music. He makes his music for the fans, and because he loves the music. I haven't listened to his new upcoming release Music of the Spheres, but based on all his other GREAT works i know it will be great. Why don't you just sit back and enjoy the music, you might find some real jewels if you wouldn't pick it apart.Mike Oldfield is the most talented musician, composer, engineer, you name it, on the face of the planet, bar none, and that's the truth.
Free Music Review: Faithful to the original sounds, but sounds better! Hit: 4 Stars
I had lost my original copy of TB, so when I saw this, I figured, "Why not?" I was not disappointed. I popped it in the CD player and it immediately made me smile, because it wasn't a "remake," "remix," or "rehash." It was like hearing the original the way I wished I could have heard it, in full audio glory. The most significant difference, which I don't mind because it also makes me smile, is the use of John Cleese to narrate the "roll call" section... sweet! :o) All of the quirky guitar, bass, and synth sounds you remember are here... you just hear *more* of them. The original was sonically groundbreaking in its time... but thank God for modern recording technology! Nicely done, Mike!
Free Music Review: The Creative Pot is Finally Well and Truly Off the Boil... Hit: 4 Stars
I actualy enjoyed this re-rendering, if only because it shows how creatively bankrupt Oldfield has been in the last 15 years or so, and how fantastic this work really is, even 30 years on. And the awful wah-wah guitar tone he has favoured of late only makes a couple of appearances on this CD. It's really a pretty sad state of affairs for an artist to not only re-interperet his most famous work umpteen times, but to then re-create it, note perfectly, er, for what? Like George Lucas digitally "enhancing" his original Star Wars movies, what's the point? You made the statement, leave the damn thing alone, it's done already! Still love the album, but Mike, please retire or help the homeless if this is all you have to offer.
