Free Music Notes for Soul MarrabentaFree Music Review: A swinging, spiritual entry from Mozambique Hit: 5 StarsMabulu is an inter-generational Mozabican group that incorporates South African and Zimbabwean pop in with the traditional marabenta pop. This sucker swings non-stop, but still has some tender acoustic guitar and sax along with the rocking sides. The female vocalist sounds like Sade without the quaaludes, and the drummer is a thumping storm.
Free Music Review: Generation mix Hit: 5 StarsWhat is special about this CD -and Mabulu in general- is the mix of different generations and several music styles. The traditional Mozambican Marabenta forms the basis, whereas modern influences, especially African hip-hop, form an important element of the music and gives it something extra. The music is full of positive energy and the songs all have a clear message, especially related to social problems that countries like Mozambique currently face. The generation mix is also visible in the composition of the group; the musicians ages vary from 20 to 70 years old.
