Big is the appropriate word when talking about Macy Gray. Physically imposing with big hair, big voice, big attitude and big talent. But in recent years her pursuit of true divadom has had her either going off the deep end musically or off into deep space with the mothership taking her back to wherever she came from. As a certain women's magazine might have asked, "Can This Career Be Saved?"
"Big" (the CD) answers that question with a resounding YES!!! Producers will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas and Ron Fair (of Christina Aguilera and the Pussycat Dolls fame) have reined in Macy's excesses without taming the wild, willful inner child. Wrapping her highly distinctive voice with brilliant arrangements that she easily makes shine, they have taken Macy to new heights of expression and brought forth a wide variety of styles all of which she conquers.
Every cut is a doozy and, with a little help from radio and VH1, several even sound like hits - "What I Gotta Do," the fabulous "Ghetto Love," the footstomping "Everybody" and the tasty "Treat Me Like Your Money" with its Dead Or Alive quoting and will.i.am rap. On top of those treats there are the soulful "Shoo Be Doo," the jazzy "Glad You're Here," the interesting "Okay" and "Strange Behavior" which thematically cribs from her first CD's "I've Committed Murder" and proves her enormous growth as a vocalist.
In this era of American Idol runner-ups and Mouseketeer graduates dominating the charts, a beautifully talented offbeat oddball like Macy Gray would never be given the opportunity to shine. But she beat all of them into the spotlight and with "Big" re-takes her rightful place there.
