Who is Mad Kap?

They are a trio consisting of Coke, Motif and Dr. Soose (who plays the trumpet on a few tracks). The beats are provided by Broadway, a favored producer of the famous King Tee, who along with Tha Alkaholiks make appearances on this short album. I had no idea who these guys were when I bought this album, but because they were down with Tha Likwid Crew and had a dope producer in Broadway, I figured I had nothing to lose (plus I found it for $1).

Even though I bought it just to hear the beats (hard to go wrong in '93) and the guest spots (the young "21 & Over" era Liks are always entertaining), I was quite surprised with the album as a whole. The three MCs are pretty dope, with each one able to hold a verse together with dope rhymes, whether on a fast or slow tip. My biggest knock on Mad Kap is each man's lack of personality and diversity, thus making each MC hard to recognize from the other. For perspective, when you hear Tash you know it's Tash, same goes for J-Ro, and so on.

Still, the best parts of the album are the beats (having a live trumpet on some tracks gives the album a unique twist) and the guest appearances by King Tee and Tash on "Check it Out" and Tash and J-Ro on "Beddie-Bye." As for Mad Kap themselves they are quite similar to Tha Liks, although not as funny or talented but still entertaining.

Bottom Line: A good EP (9 tracks), that a true fan of Tha Likwid Crew would appreciate. Not worth a huge price tag (over $20), but if you can find it cheaper, I recommend you cop it. 4 stars, Peace.

Free Music Review: Great! Surprised they don't make music anymore.

This is a great CD from 1993. I think these guys were ahead of their time. I'm very surprised that they aren't making music anymore (at least not as Mad Kap). They sound a little like the Beatnuts. Find out more about them on AllMusic.com.
