Free Music Notes for AboveFree Music Review: Phenomenally Chill Rock Album Hit: 5 StarsFrom the first few bass notes that open the album, it's clear that this album will defy any categorizations we might want to make based on the members' other bands. It isn't Alice in Chains, it isn't Pearl Jam, it isn't Screaming Trees. It's Mad Season.
The lyrics are touching, Layne's vocals are in top form and hence soul-searchingly haunting while remaining just utterly beautiful. The emphasis in this album, I would say, is Layne. The rest of the band's music is interesting, but nowhere near as complex as their work in their respective big bands. That isn't to say it's bad at all--in fact, many times, playing less is what makes the music better. Layne really makes the album what it is, however.
Highlights are "Long Gone Day" and its creepy Latin vibe, as well as "X-Ray Mind" and Layne's amazing vocal harmonies. One of the things I love about Layne's style is how well it takes to long, drawn out words that take maybe a whole measure per syllable but are still as catchy as hell.
"Lifeless Dead" isn't one of the album's best, but deserves honorable mention just for Layne's killer scream in the beginning of the chorus. Hell yes!!!
"All Alone" is the song that I have been waiting to hear since I heard what Layne did to Jar Of Flies...dreamy, atmospheric music with trademark Layne minor-key harmonies and sparse lyrics. Amazing closer to the album.
My favorite track, however, is "River of Deceit," which not only displays the best musicianship on the album--just listen to what a few well-played upright bass notes bring to the verses--but the Layne's lyrics and singing are incredible. They give me chills every time. The message of the song--that pain is always real but sometimes self-imposed and that we always have a choice of what to do with it--is one that really resonates with me personally, as well.
In summary, one of my favorite albums for its stellar mix of the eerie and the beautiful, its simultaneous rocking and thinking, and its timeless blend of musicianship and mass appeal. If you listen to hard rock and like to chill out someimes, this album without a doubt has a place in your music library.
Free Music Review: the era may be gone but the music lives on... Hit: 5 StarsSome of the most creative, lyrical, and tightest-sounding grunge is on this album. From start to finish, I can give it no less than 5 stars.
It is perhaps fitting that this one-time band made only one album. This album is nearly peerless. It is also not well known and after you listen to it you'll be thankful for that.
If you have sweet memories of the day, you will find, as I do, that this album is powerful and brings you right back. It is what the best of the grungers made then, and would be making today had they not blown up.
Discover it for yourself and see if you out grow it in 10 years. It's been that long for me and I'm still captivated by Mad Season.
Free Music Review: A Melodic Grunge Masterpiece Hit: 5 StarsAlice In Chains.....Pearl Jam.....Screaming Trees, get yourself chris cornell and you've got yourself an unrivaled supergroup. but that's really just being greedy.
this album is a 10 song collection of some of the most haunting and beautifully crafted grunge songs ever. a one off album like 'temple of the dog', 'above' deserves to be a hell of a lot more acclaimed than it is. but that's part of the attraction. spinning this disc and knowin the masses are missing out, perversly makes it that more enjoyable. 'long gone day' 'river of deceit' and 'artificial red' are the stand out tracks on an album smouldering with some of the finest recorded songs ever. no exageration, it really is that damned good
Free Music Review: a long mind-trip... Hit: 5 StarsIn the year of 1995, the world has been gifted with this music masterpiece. Mad Season's "Above" is an unique album, with flawless songs, which leads you, somehow, to another state of mind while you're through it.
The hypnotic and smoothly-screaming voice of Layne Staley makes you feel numb and relaxed.
I'd recommend you to get home, put this CD on, turn off all the lights, lay down in your bed/couch, and let all your senses fall away, as the music slowly takes you to a far distant place.
Free Music Review: must own Hit: 5 Starsthis is a must own for every grunge lover
