Free Music Notes for Careless LoveFree Music Review: In A Word...Classy Hit: 5 StarsMy neighbors introduced me to Madeline Peyroux's music and I was enthralled. She has a retro quality to her stylings that evoke a time when people used to get dressed to go out. If you're having people over or just a nice quiet evening at home with some wine, cheese and fruit (and that special someone) you can't miss with this. Her other offerings that I particularly like are Dreamland and Half the Perfect World. Thanks, Mark & Linda!
Free Music Review: Lovely Hit: 5 StarsMadeleine Peyroux's voice is just perfect. It's the kind of voice you just desperately want to listen to--she could be singing the dictionary and I'd be enthralled. But of course, she's working from a brilliant and interesting combination of songs here so it really is a wonderful CD.
"Dance Me To the End of Love," "Between the Bars," and "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" are my absolute favorites. In each, Peyroux brings the song to her--you temporarily forget that anyone else has ever sung it. "Lonesome" is particularly good; just a subtle change in her voice and it all comes together amazingly. A lot of the time I wonder what some wonderful song would sound like in a female singer's voice. Now I ponder more specifically: what would it sound like if Peyroux sang it?
Her French is wonderful and so CLEAR which is a blessing for those of us with high school French, who nevertheless want to understand the words.
A necessary CD. If only to put you to bed with sweet dreams every night. ;)
Free Music Review: NO New sounds on this CD Hit: 2 StarsThis CD has nothing new on it. I am just tired of the same songs being sung over and over. She has a great voice, just no inspiration.
Free Music Review: Give Us More. Please...... Hit: 5 Stars I first encountered this album a couple of years back, and it was a most pleasant surprise. This is real jazz, the way it ought to be. Madeline, for the most part, "covers" the work of others; that's OK...old standards became standards for a reason, and she covers them so well that they are virtually her own. This album is my very frequent driving companion. I have since bought her other albums, including the newest release. I wish there were more.
Madeline's personal problems have been well documented. They don't matter here. She is also said to be one of those singers who are better on disc than in person. Apparently, she has severe stage fright. Moot point. So does Carly Simon, and so did Rosa Ponselle, who was the greatest singer who ever lived.
This is a fabulous album. A reviewer once wrote "If you like Norah Jones, try this". Amen. I love Norah Jones, and listen to her frequently. But, Madeleine is in a different league.
Free Music Review: Fondness for Careless Love Hit: 4 StarsIf you've ever wished that Billie Holiday were still alive and singing. Check out Madeleine Peyroux. One of the best thing out of of Georgia in a long time.
