Free Music Notes for Confessions on a Dance FloorFree Music Review: The most consistent album since Madonna's debut Hit: 5 Stars
Confessions On A Dance Floor is perhaps the first album since her debut to be so consistently great, track-by-track. Unlike other albums people often put forward as her best--Like A Prayer and Ray of Light, for instance--there isn't a weak song on the album. Let me go through each one...
Hung Up: Surely, you've heard this by now. The ABBA sample is some of the most effective sampling I've heard in dance music; it's simple, instrumental, and blends perfectly with the chorus. One thing that's often missing in mainstream attempts at electronica is moments of really slowing it down, having sections of the song that break down the song and give it a chance to breath and meditate before building to a hard, killer beat. This is something DJ's do constantly in actual clubs and raves but is usually absent in mainstream dance CD's, but this song does it and does it well, with a lot of tick-tocking.
Get Together: This is the first of a series of more ambient, vocador-heavy songs. She repeatedly goes for a style of electronica that is most well-known in hits like Stardust's The Music Sounds Better With You but was actually pretty widespread in 90's electronica. It is a vaguely emotional but also somewhat detached style of ambient electronica, and she (largely thanks to Stuart Price) surpasses the vast majority of the stuff in that style that was going around in the 90's.
Sorry: This is probably the best song on the album. It's one of the all-time best tell-off/break-up club anthems. Anyone who listens to a lot of house music knows how many diva vocal driven dance songs have come out over the years with the same message: I'm so over you, I'm such a strong woman, so get out of my life (I'm paraphrasing, of course, but there are countless songs like this). This is one of the best ones anyone's ever done.
Future Lovers: This is another one of the ambient electronica songs. These generally aren't meant to be as single-oriented, since they're influenced by a style that never broke into the mainstream. This is a better example than Get Together, in my opinion, because it uses Madonna's always-great spoken word sexy muttering and also has a very original, quirky central melody.
I Love New York: Unlike most New York tribute songs that are naively optimistic and upbeat, this song conveys the edgy feeling of the actual city with its hard, aggressive beat. The production is similar to that of Basement Jaxx's album Rooty, and she expresses her love for the city by capturing its grit (despite her apparent unwillingness to use the actual f-word). Much more effective, in a way, than other New York tributes.
Let It Will Be: Great production, excellent example of bringing together a simple, strings melody with a dance beat. Some people say the strings are from Papa Don't Preach, but that's not true.
Forbidden Love: Another one of the ambient songs. This has a beautiful melody and is more emotional than the previous ones. People say this album has no meaning, but here we see that, at times, it's just as emotional as her other albums, just in a more subtle style.
Jump: I believe this may be a single... It's not quite on the level of Sorry, but it's easy to imagine this being a huge anthem that you hear at every club you go to.
How High: Originally written for a musical Madonna planned to star in, this is a lot better than most of the "the trouble with being famous"-type songs. Unlike Substitute For Love, for instance, it's not about wallowing in self-pity, and it just has a very strong melody.
Isaac: This one was controversial for some reason. I don't understand why. Basically, she got a guy to do some religious chanting/singing and built a dance song around his little chant. Similar to Shanti/Aghanti from Ray of Light but probably stronger overall and more danceable. It is actually pretty effective in making you feel very spiritual without sounding at all preachy or self-righteous. Yet again, some great use of strings and spoken word.
Push: This has harder, hip hop oriented verses and a slower, more emotional chorus. Actually the verses sound like choruses, so it's one of these songs that feels like it's alternating between two equally catchy hooks.
Like It Or Not: This is probably the best closer of any of her albums. As many have pointed out, it's downtempo, but when this album ends and you hear the central lyrics of this song, you feel like she's really made her case for being the best pop star in the world. She sings "This is who I am / You can like it or not / You can love me or leave me / But I'm never gonna stop." And after over 20 years of great pop music and at the end of one of her most consistent albums, those lines really sum it up perfectly. She's not trying to win everyone over, she's just being the pure pop star that she was when she started. And the reality is that she does it better than anyone in the world, and I can't think of anyone else who could put out such a consistent piece of pop music in the third decade of their career.
Free Music Review: Madonna: CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR (2005) Hit: 5 Stars
In November of 2005, Madonna released her sixteenth album entitled, CONFESSIONS ON A DANCE FLOOR. Madonna did return to her natural roots of dance music, but Madonna went futuristic disco. This album is by far one of Madonna's ultimate albums. How Madonna just keeps getting better and better with the release of each album is just beyond me.
HUNG UP
The first single from the album. This song is the lead-off single for the album and it is the only song that features an original 70s disco sound. The reason for its original 70s disco sound was the fact that Madonna had sampled the music to "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)". This is a killer tune and a perfect song to dance to. If you listen to the first verse very carefully, you'll notice that the first two lines were taken from Madonna's duet with Prince, "Love Song". The first two lines read, "Time goes by so slowly for those who wait, no time to hesitate. Those who run seem to have all the fun, I'm caught up, I'm hanging up on you".
GET TOGETHER
The third single from the album. The song's music video proves that Madonna is still a dazzler with her music videos. If you listen closely to the music, you'll be able to pick out the fact that this song is a reminiscent of Madonna's 1983 hit single, "Holiday".
SORRY
The second single from the album. Great tune here. It has been said that Madonna had sampled the baseline from The Jacksons' hit, "Can You Feel It". Sounds like the baseline to this song matches up with the baseline to "Can You Feel It".
FUTURE LOVERS
Great song here, that features a slight sample of Donna Summer's 1977 hit single, "I Feel Love". Here's a twist for all Madonna fans who do not know of this yet: Madonna, on her CONFESSIONS TOUR performs this song as the tour's opener, where she even sings a few lines from "I Feel Love".
I LOVE NEW YORK
A great dance tune, and a great homage to the city Madonna had first moved to after she left her homestate of Michigan.
LET IT WILL BE
Another great dance tune. The music to this song sounds like a reminiscent of Madonna's 1986 hit single, "Papa Don't Preach".
FORBIDDEN LOVE
This track is my favorite off of this album. Now, back in 1994, Madonna already had a song entitled, "Forbidden Love", which appeared on her 1994 album, BEDTIME STORIES (the song appeared again on Madonna's 1995 album SOMETHING TO REMEMBER). You would think from reading the title on this album that Madonna had either remixed the song or re-recorded the song, but she didn't. Madonna, pladgerized her own song title. This song is about how Madonna has met a man, who is very charming and very intriguing. Madonna is hooked to this guy, but she has to know if their love is forbidden. If you listen to the first and second verses, there is a line that is similar to a lyric in Madonna's 1987 hit single, "La Isla Bonita". Here are both lines: "...Where a girl loves a boy, and a boy loves a girl" ("La Isla Bonita")..."...Once upon a time, there was a boy and there was a girl..." ("Forbidden Love").
JUMP
The fourth single from the album. This is another great dance tune with so much hype in it. There is a line here that is very similar to a lyric from Madonna's 1990 hit single, "Keep It Together". Here is the line from this song: "...We've learned our lesson from the start, my sisters and me. The only thing you can depend on is your family..." You'll also notice that this song is the theme tune to the 2006 film, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA.
HOW HIGH
A great song that mentions to of Madonna's past-tunes: "Was it all worth it? And how did I earn it? NOBODY'S PEFECT, I guess I DESERVE IT". Both of those titles are songs from Madonna's 2000 album, MUSIC.
ISAAC
This is the song that all the Jewish Rabbis were complaining about. Those Jewish Rabbis should have not complained about the song because I think it's a great song, and it sounds like an uptempo dance version of her 1998 hit single, "Frozen".
PUSH
This is not one of my favorites from the album. But I like the fact that Madonna has dedicated this to her husband, Guy Ritchie. This is the second song Madonna has recorded for Guy, the first being "I Deserve It".
LIKE IT OR NOT
This is another one of my favorites from the album. It explains how people are always pointing their fingers at Madonna, where Madonna says that, "...This is who I am, you can like it or not. You can love me or leave me, but I'm never gonna stop...". Either you love her or you hate her, but do not, I repeat, DO NOT DISRESPECT MADONNA.
This album is definitely a masterpiece, even for Madonna, who has created so many masterpieces since that of 1983. This is an album for all Madonna fans. Do not listen to any of the Mariah Carey fans. Mariah's fan are just as stuck up as Mariah Carey, herself, is. Mariah is a little ho.
Free Music Review: Are You Ready To Jump? With Confessions On A Dancefloor, I Am!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Wow! I just got back from seeing Madonna live on the Confessions Tour and it was an amazing show! The show was heavily based on Confessions On A Dancefloor, and this cd is a hit. Her singles, Hung Up, Get Together, and Sorry have all proved to be hits by reaching number one on the Billboard Charts.
HUNG UP: The first single off of Confessions On A Dancefloor kicks off this album with a bang. Madonna repeats "Time Goes By....So Slowly" over and over again as the ABBA sample from "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!(A Man After Midnight)" builds slowly in the background. The song then bursts into a very catchy chorus and will make you get up, where ever you are. "Hung Up" is sure to get the party going! 10/10
GET TOGETHER: The third single off of Confessions on A Dancefloor features a very discofied sound to it. It has a bit of a repetitive feeling to it, but is a very neat dance song. Madonna sings, "Can We Get Together? I Really Wanna Be With You1" and this chorus is sure to get stuck in your head. A very fun song. 9.5/10
SORRY: The second single from Confessions On A Dancefloor was a song that I actually did not like for a while. It started to grow on me and I guess it is an okay song. The song is about Madonna accepting no apologies from a man and is a very upbeat song. It has a bit of a different sound compared to the other songs on this album and is in a sense, a bit darker. 7/10
FUTURE LOVER: Wow! I was actually surprised by this song at first. I thought that this song was a failure and shouldn't even be on this album. The problem is, there is a bit too much talking in the song, and is boring at first. The song really grew on me though, and is now one of my favorite songs off of Confessions On A Dancefloor. Future Lover feature the bass line of "I Feel Love" by Donna Summers, and it sounds really cool. If you turn up the volume, this song is awesome. 9/10
I LOVE NEW YORK: "I don't like cities, but I like New York. Other Places, make me feel like a dork." Yes, this is just a sample of some the "ingenious" lyrics used in I Love New York. I think that this song is rather annoying and is really repetitive. Not one of my favorites... 5/10
LET IT WILL BE: This song starts with the violin sound reminescent in Papa Don't Preach. It starts very slowly and then builds up into a fast dance song. It has very simple, yet catchy verses and it is a very cool song. Some the lyrics are, "Now I can tell you, about the place I belong. You know it won't last long. I'm at the point of no return. Just watch me burn (My favorite part)". A very cool song. 9.5/10
FORBIDDEN LOVE: This is one of my favorite songs off of Confessions On A Dancefloor because of the computerized sound and how much fun it is to dance to. Madonna sings about a lover that she feels she is forbidden tosee. It is a great song and has wonderful lyrics. 10/10
JUMP: THIS IS MY FAVORITE SONG FROM THE ALBUM!!! The theme song from "Devil Wears Prada" Jump is an amazing song off of Confessions On A Dancefloor. In my opinion, it should have been the second single off of Confessions On A Dancefloor. It makes you want to get up and dance, but does not have much meaning to the lyrics. The chorus is amazing and is very very very catchy. Definately my favorite! 20/10
HOW HIGH: This was one of my favorite songs from Confessions On A Dancefloor when it first came out, but since then. I have started to get bored of it. It is a very repetitive song but fun at the same time. The chorus goes "How high are the stakes. How much fortune can you make. Should I carry on. Will it matter when I'm gone". A different type of song. 8/10
ISSAC: "Oh no, here we go again" is all I could think when I saw the title of this song. It is actually a pretty good song though. It is just very long. It starts with a man named Issac singing in a different language and then breaks out into an upbeat middle-eastern song. A very religious, but interesting song. 8/10
PUSH: This is a very cool song. It is very upbeat and a little suggestive at the same time. It would have made a great single. it is all about her lover pushing her to do stuff and is a very neat song. There are also a lot of fast lyrics in the song. 9/10
LIKE IT OR NOT: Oh gosh. What can you say about this song? It is a very annoying song and is pretty boring. It is all about people accepting who Madonna is and how she will not stop doing what she does anytime soon. Enough said? There's not much else you can say about this song. 4/10
Apart from a couple of bad songs, Confessions On A Dancefloor is a smash hit. In my opinion, I would give it 100/10. By the way, all of the songs are connected so that it is a nonstop megamix. This makes for an extra fun cd. Expect to see more of these songs hitting clubs real soon!!!
Free Music Review: Believe the hype, this may be Madonna's best CD. Impressive work! Hit: 5 Stars
This has got to be one of this year's best releases. Critical acclaim aside, considered me shocked as I think that it's better than anything she's put out, EVER. The way underrated "Erotica" to me would be a close second.
This CD not only flows seamlessly from beginning to end, but there is not a dud to be found, which is generally not the case with ANY artist. I was very skeptical when I heard that this was here "back to dance music" CD as it sounded like a reincarnation that did not sound organic on the surface, especially considering the low sales figures for "American Life". Many have described this release solely in retro terms but while she certainly mines from the 1970s and 1980s dance crop, the songs embraces recent dance/trance/electronica sounds so the sound is equally "Into the Groove"/ "Ray of Light," but taken to a level that astounds me.
The CD starts out with the first single "Hung Up," which will rank as one of Madonna's catchiest singles. That telephone will ring in your ears long after the song is over. Next comes. "Get Together" starts out like early Madonna then weaves into a thumping hook and chorus that you won't be able to shake off. Why would you want to?
"Sorry" starts out with an otherworldly grandiose feel (think Enigma) and has lyrics that you actually remember as they dance with a chorus that just won't quit. I love the way she says sorry in several languages. It just works. The end has a Pet Shop Boys like feel that feels new not borrowed. Next comes my favorite song on the CD: "Future Lovers." She tells a little story about love that is propelled by the amazing Donna Summer/Giorgio Moroder "I Feel Love" riff. I love the way she coos right before the chorus. This is without a doubt yet another single waiting to happen.
"I Love New York" has silly lyrics but the "Can You Feel It" riff and chorus are hard to ignore and, while not as good as other songs on the CD, it does not detract from it. "Let It Will Be" starts out with visit to "Papa Don't Preach" with hypnotic strings and continues its non-stop energy attack that is this release's greatest accomplishment. The song segways perfectly into "Forbidden Love" which has beautiful lyrics and a New Order feel, which is a little slower than most of the songs on this dance-a-thon. "Jump" starts out with a confessional "Erotica" feel and a chorus, which while retro, is as strong and original as anything released this year. I love its move on and don't look behind message. Very empowering and could give Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" some company in the non-sappy, I'll be ok without you anthems.
"How High" has Madonna looking back at her life and while it does not shed much new post-"Ray Of Light" insight, it finds her making peace with the many incarnations that she's gone through in finding what works for her. No regrets which is evident in "Isaac", which centers on a contagious Jewish chant that is very melodic. Some in the Jewish community have taken offense with the song, but all I know is that it is such a beautiful song (Madonna's voice is a stand-out here) and from my limited knowledge does not seem to be offensive. I may be wrong, but I won't opine on matters that I don't understand. At worst the chants may remind some of the Eastern sounds that Sting embraced in his last CD. In a nutshell, why not use Jewish chants to create a hybrid sound that is.
"Push Me" starts out like a sequel to "Like a Prayer" and seems like a major thank you to someone very special to her. It has a subtle Latin feel to it, which segways into the CD's last song, "Like it or not," which is a strong statement to all those who have an opinion of her. It's a great closer to a set of songs that will leave you tired and wanting more and more. This CD has not left my CD player for a week, and that happens, ... actually never.
Over the years I have taken Madonna's sometime provocative opinions with a strong grain of salt, and that has allowed me to focus on the music and not on her as a personality. She's one of those bigger than life celebrities, not unlike Barbra Streisand, who gets reviewed for what people think of her, rather than focusing on the music. Her die-hard fans will give "Confessions..." 5 stars without even listening to the CD, while those who hate Madonna will continue to hate her and give this 1 star (0 if it were possible).
I am neither a die-hard fan (as my review for "American Life" will prove), nor a Madonna-basher, and can safely say that giving this release 5 stars is the result of the quality of the music. This baby flows from beginning to end, and will without a doubt be in my top 10 releases of 2005.
Free Music Review: eheh! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all....sorry 4 my english! I'm italian and this is my first review. This wants to be an answer to 2 particular reviews, one titled "garbage" and the other "this should've been called confessions of a no talent middle aged idoit (idiot)". Well, what can I say? I think this album is fantastic, not just because it's Madonna, but because it's funny, in this moment there's nothing like this. One thing has to be clear, Madonna never has pretended to be Bob Dylan, but she has always had something to say. People who bash her didn't actually listen her songs, it's just pre-concept. It makes me laugh the comparison with Mariah Carey(I have also all of her cds, including Emancipation). Madonna never self-proclaimed herself Queen of Pop. History did it, and not only because of the selling. Yes, Madonna is the biggest selling female artist of all time, but she also opened doors 4 those who followed. The first female artist with complete control of her image and products. She wasn't afraid to take risks, even if those risks could damage her career. Always opinionated. There will never be another Madonna. Want to talk about european taste regarding music? Ok! look at billboard hot 100 chart and look at UK chart....Europe=music, USA=hip/hop-rnb....America is ruled by radio....Oh my God! If radio decides that a particular artist is out, then is out....people can't choose, it's orrible. Don't tell me that Mariah carey had 4 top ten from emancipation....Ok, yes, she had them, but how much did they sell? zero. Radio decided it. You can't compare the chart achievements on billboard with no other chart, because european (and world) charts are selling charts, billboard is an airplay charts....question closed. US people is not free to buy a single, they're out of the picture. We Belong Together, 12 weeks on top. How much did it sell? zero. "Hung up" by Madonna sold tons of download, people paid for that, but it peaked at n. 7 (36th top ten hit for madonna...). Radio counts more that buying people....what are we talkin about? eheh! YOU ARE RIDICOLOUS. Mariah sold 4 million copies of emancipation....Madonna sold 4 million copies IN A WEEK! eheh! N.1 in 32 countries. After more than 20 years in the business.. GOD SAVE THE QUEEN! It looks like if an artist sells big in the us is a big artist, but (eheh) us is not the whole world guys. Take out us (if u can!) for a second....Mariah carey is nowhere near Madonna. I'm sorry 4 you, and it makes me laugh, because it seems no one has said that to you before. You can't change history. Madonna sold 350000 copies and went to number one in US with a dance album....did you realize that? You close people? before iraq war you were bashing the beautiful american life album and now, 3 years later (after seeing tha bush is an idiot) you are listening american idiot by green day? eheheheh! The whole us went against DIXIE CHICKS because of their opinion of bush....RADIO BANNED THEM. Chart achievements in American are all about radio. they went down the charts and declared a flop....you ruin people because of their opinion, land of freedom! You tried to ruin madonna's image, just because she thinks that Bush is a murderer...America life would sell 5 times more now.
So it's better for you to not judge european point of view about music....what do u think? And then, mariah....yes, big big voice. The lyrics? ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah! I agree that madonna is not Bob Dylan, but telling that Mariah has better lyrics.....it's like saying that US is an open minded country! Anyway, I'm talking to people who never read a song by Madonna, so, I know that I'm wasting my time, but I'm actually having fun! eheh! the more people bash Madonna the more I have fun!! Because if she doesn't care, why should I?
It's fun to see people so unsicure about themselves, trying to pur down the stars of the rating of a madonna's album. That's the mission of their lives (lives?). Stop now, I have to work. I hope this people will get a life (like me!), and I wish them the best. have fun people!! dance on Confessions! It's great!
It's my first review, and I had fun, I hope you forgive my mistakes with the language and my not being american (of course, because US is not a racist country, right?). I repeat it again: GOD SAVE THE QUEEN OF POP, THEN ONE (AND ONLY)....MADONNA!
Cheers, Ale
