Free Music Notes for Confessions on a Dance FloorFree Music Review: Second only to "Like A Prayer" Hit: 5 Stars
Madonna's Confessions on a Dance Floor is a welcome return to what she does best--making shameless dance pop! I'm not going to review every song here, but will cover a few highlights.
First a word about INSTRUMENTATION: Overall, the album has a full, almost orchestral quality. Basslines are deep, growling and pulsating. Live- and synth-strings accent Madonna's vocals, and while this is an electronic album overall, it sounds and feels very organic. Others have likened it to "Producing a Phil Spector `Wall of Sound'-style album for the dance floor"--and I agree!
The much talked-about CONTINUOUS MIX of the album is done extremely well. It's not the `128 beats of unremarkable overlap between each song' that one typically hears on DJ-mix CDs. It is a more traditional, symphonic style of segueing between songs. In some cases, the songs are simply butted together and sound seamless because they share a consistent tempo and instrumentation. In other cases, a final melody from one song will carry into the next, subtly fading away during the first verse. The effect is almost unnoticeable during a casual listen, but music aficionados will find themselves listening to these transitions over and over, picking up new details on which instruments are from the previous track, and which are from the next. It's an elegant and amazing effect.
Now, for the songs: Rumor has it WB is considering five singles. I'm sure you know "Hung Up" by now, so let's skip to other likely candidates.
JUMP - Easily the best song on the album, and far better than Hung Up. Likely to be single #3. Madonna's vocal delivery is somewhere between "Keep it Together" and "Rescue Me", and she sells the song beautifully. It also has an incredible string obbligato part similar to the one in "Causing a Commotion." At about 120 BPM the rhythm is reminiscent of Information Society, and the tempo is excellent for dance pop. Expect great remixes in the 128-130 range on this one (Hello WB? Ralphi Rosario please!)
SORRY - Rumored to be single #2. A great song which, following the more straightforward Hung Up and Get Together, has a frantic pace in comparison. Reminiscient of her "Till Death Do Us Part," but without the unhappy subject matter. This one is all fun, energy, and sass.
HOW HIGH - Has that slight postpunk/pop rhythm, similar to Kylie Minogue's "Come into My World." One of the few truly introspective songs on the album, but despite being in a minor (or diminished, I can't quite tell) key, it is not the least bit depressing. It comes across as defiant. Not the sure-bet that Jump and Sorry are, but in an edited length it can be a radio hit.
FUTURE LOVERS - Recreates the bubbling, pulsating bassline from Donna Summer's "I Feel Love," however here, Stuart Price deepens the bass and adds a heavier bass drum. The spoken parts of the vocal are similar to Kylie Minogue's "Light Years", but the choral vocal is much more immediate. A great song as is for clubs, but could also be a radio hit if it were tightened up a bit.
PUSH - This one feels more urban than the rest of the album because of Madonna's staccato vocal delivery. It's sassy and quite catchy.
With at least six single-worthy songs and others that have great club rhythms, I recommend this album to any dance or pop music fans. The continuous mix makes skipping songs unnecessary (there are at most two skip-worthy songs on the album), and appreciators of good music production should love how well this continuous effect was done.
Free Music Review: Grow up... Hit: 5 Stars
All this negativity and stupid comments being posted need to stop. What people are supposed to be posting on here are reviews yet all i see are personal attacks on artists by people who dislike them and obviously have not even listened to their music before "reviewing" it. Both Madonna and Mariah Carey are talented women in their own right. Both work hard and continue to put out music and both deserve recognition for their talent and years in the industry. They continue to crank out hits without taking long breaks in between (unlike Janet) and they write and produce their own material (unlike Whitney and Celine). But to compare them both is ridiculous. Madonna is a dance/pop music artist and Mariah is soul/r+b/hip hop. They both excel at the type of music they do in a way that the other could not if they were to try to switch their respective styles. Both artists have their loyal fan base and deservedly so. After both artists last releases were lackluster it is nice to see that in 2005 they both made strong comebacks with great albums. So why all the hatred? Some people have WAY too much time on their hands and it shows in these postings on here. These TeamLamb fools who keep posting their threats about "ruining" Madonna's success. Please..give us a break. Given the very strong reception that Confessions On A Dance Floor got worldwide in it's first week of release it is obvious that your attempts mean nothing. Madonna has always had people who disliked her since the beginning of her career in 1983 and that never stopped her from selling over 200 million albums worldwide. If you think your pointless attempts are going to make much of a difference now you are just plain stupid. I supposed if Janet Jackson had just released a new cd you would be trashing her too because you are upset that Mariah would have to share the spotlight with someone else. Mariah had a very successful year because she put out a very good album, now Madonna has released a very good album and deserves her chance to shine too. And your comments are totally biased and untrue. Calling Mariah Carey the biggest musical influence since the Beatles? Apparently you have no knowledge of music over the course of the past 30 years. Have you ever heard of Michael Jackson? Sure his career is not much now but he still holds the record for having the biggest selling album of all time. That achievement can not be ignored. What about the fact that Whitney Houston's first two albums both sold over 10 million copies in the US alone? And of course, Madonna, who has gone on to sell over 200 million albums and another 75 million singles to date and has 36 top ten singles in the US. If you do not like someone's music, then don't buy it, don't support it. You don't have to like something someone else does but who do you think you are trying to dictate to other people what they should buy or enjoy? Grow up and support the music you enjoy and stop posting stupid comments on here. And to Madonna fans..yes they did start this nonsense but posting terrible reviews for Mariah is only encouraging their stupid, childish behavior. I say to everyone, both Madonna and Mariah fans, if you see these types of hateful reviews on here please report them. They should not be allowed to be posted on Amazon as they are not reviews and they are only cluttering up the real reviews. Report them so that they will no longer continue to be posted on here. Amazon should really start doing a better job of screening these reviews so they can not repeatedly be posted on here.
Free Music Review: Picture yourself on the dancefloor Hit: 5 Stars
I was living in Mayport, Florida around this time when the cd came out and none of the radio stations were playing this cd. Nonetheless, fortunately my husband purchased this cd for me as a gift and it has been a gift I have been enjoying ever since. Here is the rundown of each of the songs
Hung Up 7/10 A unique song with strong eurodance background music that in my opinion is a solid beginner. One can easily picture themselves at a danceclub with this song.
Get Together 10/10 A song that I definitely wish would have been played on the radio but is a strong addition to this cd. This song is a beautiful blending of her creative vocals about getting together with someone that mixes well with the complementary background music. When I worked out after work in Florida I would play this song alot.
Sorry 8/10 I liked the beginning to this song where it sounds like she is quoting I think is Italian (feel free to correct if its another language) and I like the way the vocals "I heard it all before" are scattered throughout the song.
Future Lovers 8/10 Again this is another song where the background music really strengthened the song. This is because the background music in my opinion sounded very futuristic and one can picture themselves in a dance club 20 years from now still enjoying this song.
I Love New York 6/10 This song was ok but I admit that that the reason why this song wasn't as highly rated by me compared to the other ones is the good lyrics but I felt more emotion could have been added to the song but still a listenable song.
Let It Will Be 10/10 Very gorgeous and beautiful and classical like background music with vocals that send a positive message to the listener to be peaceful and happy regardless of circumstances.
Forbidden Love 10/10 Another creative and futuristic song that beautifully sounds like a story as she is singing about a love desired but forbidden.
Jump 10/10 I really like this song because it encourages the listener not to be afraid of taking chances and to believe in their dreams and a positive outcome as they are taking these chances.
How High 9/10 A great song where she is reflecting on how far she has come mixed with an upbeat rhythm. This song could also be applied to other people who have come far as well. This is my opinion is the beauty of this song.
Isaac 9/10 A very gorgeous song that is upbeat and seems to pay a respectful ode to Isaac. Listening to this song its challenging for me to understand why there would be critics to this song because if one listens to the song it would be easy to see how she is paying her respects in a creative but upbeat way.
Push 10/10 A very unique song that magically blends what sounds like middle east with eurodance beats about being encouraged to do ones best. Although I think that she is sending her positive respects to her husband encouraging her, on a positive note anyone can picture themselves being encouraged by someone they care about in this song.
Like It or Not 10/10 A wonderful song that sends a message to her critics and fans alike that she is going to continue to thrive and be around. Plus it sends a message about her inspiring confidence because you can tell by the song that she has an enduring but inspiring faith that love for her will grow.
If you are looking for a good cd to dance to and workout too this is definitely one of the gems to purchase.
Free Music Review: Mariah Who??? Hit: 5 Stars
Let me first start off by commenting on these negative comments being posted by these morons called "Team Lamb" who are basically a bunch of obsessed Mariah Carey fans who are posting negative reviews about Madonna and intend to contact radio stations and other outlets in an attempt to ruin sales of Confessions on a Dancefloor. You people need to seriously get a life. It sounds like nothing more than a case of sour grapes to me. People who are afraid that Madonna may receive some of the attention that she deserves with her current release. God forbid if Mariah isn't number one on the charts for nine years straight!! As far as your comments about positive reviews for Madonna being by "desperate" fans..apparently you haven't read Billboard, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, People Magazine, etc. who have all posted positive reviews for Confessions on a Dance Floor. These are all respected reviewers not "obsessed" fans posting positive reviews. Get a life and find something constructive to do with your time like listening to We Belong Together over and over again until your ears bleed. The fact is Madonna has released a great album here and the attention she is receiving is well deserved. 23 years in the music industry and she is still one of the most innovative, unique and creative artists in music today. Unlike Mariah Carey who turns out the same generic r+b songs over and over with a million rappers on them and has to re-release her album with a "new" song that is nothing more than a remake of We Belong Together. She is robbing her own fans of more money just so she can sell another million copies of the same cd she released in April.
As far as Confessions on a Dance Floor goes, I have listened to this cd several times now and i can honestly tell you that this is one of Madonna's best albums. Right up there with Ray of Light, Like a Prayer and Music. I am not just some obsessed fan who will give anything Madonna does a 5-star review. The truth is that aside from a few songs like Die Another Day, Nothing Fails and Mother and Father, I didn't care that much for American Life. It didn't seem like Madonna's heart was into that release. But Confessions is a major return to form for her. The production is solid and the tracks are all catchy and any of them could be potential hit singles. The lead single Hung Up is a deliriously catchy dance track right up there with past dance hits like Holiday, Into the Groove, Vogue and Music. It's already number one on the dance charts and is continuing to grow at radio as it's single sales and digital downloads are strong and contine to grow. The song will most likely end up in the top ten soon on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. It has already hit number 1 on almost every other international chart across the world.
Other favorites are Get Together, Sorry (the next single), I Love New York, Let It Will Be, Jump and Push. But all the tracks are great. Isaac is beautiful and melodic and How High has a great 80's electro feel to it. Future Lovers recalls classic Donna Summer and I Love New York has a punk feel to it inspired by Blondie hits like Call Me and Heart of Glass. Speaking of the track Sorry again, this song has the potential to be one of Madonna's biggest hits in years. Just wait until it is remixed and sent to the clubs, it will be massive like Ray Of Light. If you are a Madonna fan or a fan of dance music please pick up this release. You will not be disappointed.
Free Music Review: WOW!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is simply unbelievable! Who would've thought that after a disappointing "American Life" that an artist could come rocking back through with possibly one of her best albums? Well many Madonna fans are probably ecstatic over this release, and well justified. Here's the breakdown:
01"Hung Up"
ABBA-sampled, everyone has heard: love it (9/10)
02"Get Together"
Love the beat to this song; a bit of trance, a club-friendly vibe splashed with a sampling of the SOS Band (10/10)
03"Sorry"
Starting with some very sexy linguistics of the phrase "sorry" in a multitude of languages, the song grows into a piece of electro-pop confection as quite possibly one of her best songs in years (10/10)
04"Future Lovers"
Playing off like an instructional how-to-techno guide for beginners, "Lovers" then delves head-first into another dimension with its pulsing beats and monotonous vocals (8/10)
05"I Love New York"
Rhyming "New York" with "dork"?? Lyrically challenged, though there is no denying the pulsating beats. Isn't this what fun dance music is all about? (7/10)
06"Let It Will Be"
This song reminds me a lot of "Die Another Day"; from the strings, to the vocal distortion...hey wait a minute, I see Mirwais on the songwriting credits! Did I happen to mention "DAD" is one of my favorite dance songs of hers? (9/10)
07"Forbidden Love"
Nothing like the title on "Bedtime Stories", the song is more trance than club. I especially like the countdown into...(8/10)
08"Jump"
If you are familar with the "Frozen" remixes (specifically Stereo MCs) then you will instantly recognize the beat to this one. The song is catchy and radio-friendly (8/10)
09"How High"
With the lyrics getting more personal, the song sounds like it was ripped straight from her diary. Deep and introspective, Stuart Price intertwines the lines using psychadelic voice sampling into the studdering beats. This one sounds like it would've fit onto "Music" perfectly (8/10)
10"Isaac"
Lots of controversy on this one equals lots of promotion for what is being called the album's centerpiece. With Arabic chants, Indian beats, reflective lyrics, melodic verses - the song is the "Ray Of Light" album wrapped into 6 minutes of genius. Stuart Price deserves a Grammy for this one (12/10)
11"Push"
The thumping bass has still to leave my head from the first time I heard this song. Madonna fans can recognize similarities to "Keep It Together", "La Isla Bonita" as well as the original "Justify My Love (The Beast Within Mix). The song, a love song for Guy Ritchie, is touching and sincere and just a great feel-good song for anyone in love. Best song on the album: (15/10)
12"Like It Or Not"
Madonna at what she does best: being Madonna. Is she writing to the critics? fans? cynics? the world? The beat absolutely rocks; I absolutely agree with the comparison to "Personal Jesus" from Depeche Mode. And yeah, "Fever" anyone? (10/10)
I know I will catch flack for my 2 scores of over 10, but out of all the scores of 10/10, I feel those are the songs that stand out just above those others. If you're a Madonna fan, you will love this. If your not, but you enjoy listening to classic dance/disco of the 70s, give this a try. At age 47, Madonna has not lost a beat and brings us headlong into the sound of future-disco. All hail the queen!
