Free Music Review: Madonna Proves She Knows How To Make Music With Music!

Throughout 1998 and 1999, Madonna portrayed the mother-Earth image in videos such as "Frozen," "Drowned World/Substitute For Love" and "The Power Of Goodbye" which was backed by her phenomenal comeback album, "Ray Of Light." Her fans loved it but by 2000, they seemed to be sick of it - as we all know, Madonna is the pop chameleon of re-invention and people were dying to know what she would do next. Quite possibly one of the greatest transitions in her 20 year career, Madonna did the total opposite to being all serious and moody - she let it all hang out and partied into the new millennium. The career change worked a charm when she released her eighth studio album "Music," in September 2000. The album went straight to No.1 in the UK and US - and a staggering 24 other countries worldwide, a feat not matched by Madonna since 1986's "True Blue" (No.1 in 28 countries). Music followed a similar style to Ray Of Light, but was more pop/dance-oriented rather than the techno/electronica-oriented feel of Ray Of Light. Madonna had a job on her hands if she wanted to please her fans. How could she provide the world with another stunning album like Ray Of Light? The simple answer is that she couldn't - Music is good, but doesn't come near Ray Of Light and I'm not sure another record in her career will do the same...
Music begins with the album's title track, "Music." Undoubtedly a Madonna classic, Music was released in August 2000 and rocketed straight to No.1. The feel-good dance beats and computerised lyrics were a refreshing change from the Queen of Pop - people loved it, but was it here to stay? A die-hard fan of Madonna will know her style never stays permanent. "Impressive Instant" is the next song. This is another superb dance track that went down a treat at Madonna's Drowned World Tour in 2001. It's sort of a follow up to Music with a similar bassline and voice co-ordination. The biggest crime is that it wasn't released as a single. "Runaway Lover" is another great song, because it has a high-pitched, echoing beat with a Mr Oizi (Flat Beat) style bassline! It's yet another fast-paced disco-filler that would've sounded perfect on Ray Of Light. For some strange and unexplainable reason, the song always reminds me of a ship out at sea in a storm - it's probably the "You don't care where you drop your anchor" lyrics and the beat that sounds like it's rising from the sea bed to the surface after the lyrics, "It doesn't pay!" that are repeated over and over. Definitely an album highlight. "I Deserve It" is a slower song. This mid-tempo indie track is an obvious complement to Madonna's hubby, Guy Ritchie ("This Guy was meant for me"). The song is also a thank you to her tens of millions of fans across the world as Madonna croons, "Many miles, many roads I have travelled - fallen down on the way. Many heart, many years have unravelled - leading up 'til today."
"Amazing" is a good song, but seems a bit too much like a weaker version of Beautiful Stranger. This song was co-written and produced by William Orbit - the man behind Ray Of Light. The song lacks the emotion of any of the tracks he previously produced on Ray Of Light, but the fun and high-energy choruses, bassline and beats make up for it. "Nobody's Perfect" is rather slow but still beautiful. This soft and mellow mid-tempo ballad is quite strange. Madonna's vocals have vocoder special-effects on them which might sound cringe-worthy, but this is Madonna and she can make anything sound good! The album continues on a high with "Don't Tell Me." This country/pop inspired song was the second song to be taken from the album Music in November 2000, where it peaked at No.4 in the UK. The video saw Madonna clad in cowboy gear as she danced her way around with a selection of cowboys. The choice set off an international craze as fashion designers all over the world fell over themselves to re-create Madonna's unique style - a style that would've been unthinkable a year previously. "What It Feels Like For A Girl" is a soft and gorgeous almost-lullaby song. This was the fourth and final single to be taken from Music in April 2001. The video caused outrage around the world. "Madonna drives the censors potty - again!" screamed the headlines. The video was banned from MTV and released on DVD worldwide - once again, Madonna made millions from the sales proving she knows how to make a bob or two! The single version was a dance remix, while the album version is a much more mellow and calm effort.
"Paradise (Not For Me)" is the album's masterpiece. This superb song clocks in at over six and a half minutes and was produced by William Orbit. This time he gets it spot on; this amazingly complex yet simplistic gem is definitely Ray Of Light material and is one of the best songs on this album. "Gone" is This is another mid-tempo indie/rock song with a superb acoustic guitar solo. Despite being an all round brilliant song, I see it as the worst on the whole album. "American Pie" is Madonna's much-hated cover, which flopped in the US! This was the first single to be taken from Music in February 2000, where it peaked at No.1 in the UK - Madonna's ninth UK No.1 single. This cover of Don McLean's classic is superb and expertly done - another superb song from Ms Ritchie.
OVERALL GRADE: 9/10
Music is an album that not only has superb creativity through its lyrics and beats, but also strengthens the theory that Madonna truly in the greatest female artist that has ever walked the Earth. If you don't have Music buy it now to add to your Madonna collection. I've had it since Christmas 2000 and listen to it on a regular basis. It's one of those albums that you might forget about a bit, but once you drag it out again you'll find a whole bunch of new reasons of why you loved it so much in the first place.
