Free Music Review: Madonna: YOU CAN DANCE (1987)
Hit: 5 Stars

In 1987, after starring in the theatrical bomb, "Who's That Girl", Madonna released her fourth album entitled, YOU CAN DANCE. This album is actually Madonna's first remix album, featuring seven of her tunes (three from MADONNA, one from LIKE A VIRGIN, one from "Desperately Seeking Susan", one from TRUE BLUE, and one new song), released from her first three albums, appearing in an Extended 12" Mix format. These mixes are just what the dance clubs need and just what club goers need.

SPOTLIGHT
New song. The album's first & only single. This song, which is a non-U.S. single (released as a single in Japan and some areas in the U.K. only), was originally recorded for the TRUE BLUE album, but Madonna left off of that album, and decided to include it here. It's a great song, with enough of a groove and beat to hit the dance floor. The lyrics have enough inspiration to make anybody really go for their goals in life.

HOLIDAY
From the 1983 album MADONNA. Still an awesome song.

EVERYBODY
From the 1983 album MADONNA. Still a great dancin' tune.

PHYSICAL ATTRACTION
From the 1983 album MADONNA. Still a great song.

OVER AND OVER
From the 1984 album LIKE A VIRGIN. What a great track.

INTO THE GROOVE
From the 1985 motion picture DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN. I can never tire of this song, no matter how many times I hear it.

WHERE'S THE PARTY
From the 1986 album TRUE BLUE. Awesome party song.

HOLIDAY (Dub Version) (CD & Cassette Formats)
From the 1983 album MADONNA. Still an awesome song.

INTO THE GROOVE (Dub Version) (CD & Cassette Editions)
From the 1985 motion picture DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN. I can never tire of this song, no matter how many times I hear it.

WHERE'S THE PARTY (Dub Version) (CD Edition Edition)
From the 1986 album TRUE BLUE. Awesome party song.

SPOTLIGHT (Dub Version) (Cassette Edition)

Free Music Review: "You can dance ... for inspiration"
Hit: 5 Stars

"You Can Dance" is without doubt Madonna's most underrated album. Although there is some justification for this - the 7-track compilation featured only one new track - it is one of the more important pieces in the story of her almost 20-year career. Before Janet and Prince became famous for their remix compilations, Madonna lobbed this one out into the musical world. Her seamlessly segued 1987 dance mix anthology "You Can Dance" presented some of the best Madonna tunes of the past four years, all in newly remixed format. "Shiny and new", indeed!

Although the mixes of "Holiday" and "Physical Attraction" do not differ too much from the originals, it's lovely to see the latter released again, a much under-appreciated classic from "Madonna" (1983). The new track, "Spotlight", sounds like the lovechild of "Holiday" and "Lucky Star", although it is reportedly an offcut from the "True Blue" sessions. Complete with the trademark eighties funky guitar riffs and a great rhythm section, although not in the league of other "True Blue" tracks (read: "Open Your Heart" and "Papa Don't Preach"), it makes a welcome addition to any fans' collection.

The remix of "Everybody" is great, upping the tempo slightly and adding an extended vocal section towards the end, and "Where's The Party" appears in an extended and more danceable form, but the two jewels of this set are "Into The Groove" and "Over And Over". "Over And Over" has received the most attention from the remixers, adding a completely new percussion backing to the original "Like A Virgin" album track and extending it greatly. Now, what was once an average filler track, is a deliciously lengthy dance-fest, not out of place on this compilation at all. As for "Into The Groove", this takes a good track in the first place and turns it into something *AMAZING*. Come on, you can't tell me you've never bounced around your living room to this tune ... "you can dance ... for inspiration". The new mix is terribly eighties, but somehow it's oddly compelling - like a lot of eighties material. "Step to the, step to the, step to the beat - DANCE!" Oh, it's so horribly addictive!

Buy the CD version and you gain three bonus "dub" versions not available on the original LP - "Holiday", "Into The Groove" and "Where's The Party", making 10 tracks in all. Whilst this might not be the perfect CD for the casual Madonna fan - that would be the glorious "Immaculate Collection" - this is easily one of the best CD's for any fans of Madonna's eighties dance tunes. No retro party is complete without "You Can Dance".

Free Music Review: ...And You Can Dance
Hit: 5 Stars

As 1987 came to a close, Madonna had had enjoyed much success from her second staring movie role (Who's That Girl) and a number one soundtrack to accompny it. So what better way to close the year, than with the best Madonna Dance Tunes. All of these songs are played in contious sequence, with the expection of the dubs, which means instead of a pause between songs, they just keep going, which is great on the dance floor.

1)Spotlight: the only new song that appeared on this album. This song is so beautiful. It is a "go for your dreams song". The beat is wonderful to dance to and the vocals are gorgeous. Madonna, again outdid herself. 6/5 stars
2)Holiday: This dance version, is very close to the orginal, except they are a few differnt instruments used here and it is about 20 second longer than the album version.
3)Everybody: This version is okay. It is good to dance to, but I like the one that appeared on Madonna- The First Album, the best.
4)Physical Attraction: The only song that did not get "re-done". This version is exactly the same as the orginal. A new, more dance version, would have been great to go on this collection, why it was chosen not to be "re-done" I don't know.
5)Over and Over: The one song on this collection, I don't reallly like that well. I never like the orginal that well, so I am not fond of this one either. The mix was done well, though.
6)Into The Groove: The famous 8:29 version, that everyone is familiar with. This version is very good. I adore it, but the one thing that is done wrong, is that it takes away the sound that made the orginal cut. I love the 1985 version of Into the Groove, it is my favorite and always will be, I wished Shep would have based this version more on the '85 version.
7)Where the Party?: Another Dance version Shep did. I really like this version, but it is like 7+ minutes long and it gets kinda boring, because the sound doesn't change much and the song, it self, is slightly repitious.
8)Holiday (Dub Version): This is one of the few Dubs, I really like, but I love this one.
9)Into the Groove (Dub Version): This is dubbed from the version shep did. If it was dubbed from the orginal, it would have been better.
10)Where's the Party?(Dub Version): Eghh Not really my fav song on the cd, but it still okay and a nice close to this gorgeous compilation.

This cd is truly worth your money. It is great for Madonna fans/Dance fans, basically all types!

Free Music Review: A good compilation of 12"-type mixes
Hit: 5 Stars

I know this isn't exactly every fan's favorite Madonna album and I can't say it is mine even, but I have nonetheless liked it a lot since buying it in 1990, thinking then as now that putting together a collection of 12"-like versions of popular dance songs of hers that hadn't had official 12" versions made of them was a fine idea. (You could however argue that Everybody and Holiday already had 12" versions, but I'd be inclined not to count these personally seeing as they were in the US at least nothing more or less than the unedited, full-length versions, while the UK 12" remix of Everybody was probably never that accessible anyway.)

Besides the choice of tracks, the mixes on YCD being extended and jazzed-up forms of the originals yet without departing too radically from them is what I particularly like about it. Indeed, the added sounds and livelier feel of the YCD version of Over and Over caused me to go off that on the Like a Virgin album as soon as I first heard the former (even if they do sound similar), and the more 'beaty' and up-to-date nature of Everybody makes this one, too, an improvement on the original in my opinion.

Into the Groove on the other hand has many echoes or vocals repeated over and over again in rapid succession which I can imagine might start to grate on me a bit if I were to hear this mix more than twice in a short space of time and which perhaps make it seem a little dated now; but since they were so in vogue in the 1980s, they undoubtedly helped to make it sound pretty cutting-edge back in its day and hence very good for a 12" version that never was.

Holiday and Where's the Party aren't what I'd call much (if any) better than their album versions either; but in spite of these also being far-from-drastic remix jobs, they are still different enough to be likely to give someone who likes the originals some incentive to listen to the YCD mixes of them once in a while for a bit of a change.

The previously unreleased Spotlight is I guess in somewhat of a class of its own - not one of Madonna's best I wouldn't say, but decent enough to have been deserving of a release as a single worldwide rather than (as was the case) in Japan only.
