Free Music Review: A Top Recommendation for *Das Lied*

I would like to offer something of a minority report on this recording of *Das Lied.* I have always regarded Reiner's interpretation as anything but austere and Maureen Forrester as anything other than a supremely eloquent soloist. Reiner's way with Mahler is unique, almost impressionistic in its sensuous allure and evocation of atmosphere. Rarely have I ever heard Mahler's "orientalisms" sound less trite and more poetic. He gets the balance of desolation and voluptuous ardor exactly right in *Der Abschied*; nothing is overstated or melodramatic, and the element of detachment makes for welcome restraint elsewhere in the work as well. Yet the valedictory qualities in the work are all the more devastating for not being overdone. I wouldn't call this quality austerity, however, but rather high poetry graced with an extraordinary delicacy. Much of the credit for the etherial beauty of this orchestral tapestry must go to the Chicago Symphony, recorded here in their heyday under Reiner.
Forrester and Lewis are just right for their respective roles. The former's gorgeous "mother-earth" contralto is perfectly suited to the even-numbered songs. Her breath control and phrasing are, to my ears, immaculate, and her pointing of the text as poignantly compassionate as one could wish. Lewis, on the other hand, conveys with harrowing conviction a world-weariness born of burned-out decadence that has long since recoiled from "all dem morschen Tande dieser Erde." The perfect voice for the part.
RCA has been doing wonders with their "Living Stereo" hybrid-SACD series. The original LPs sounded glorious, but these transfers are more vivid in impact and clear as a bell. If you are at all a fan of the CSO, of Reiner, of the soloists, of RCA's legendary "Living Stereo" series--or all of the above--do not delay! You will be richly rewarded by one of the great Mahler recordings of the 20th Century. There are, of course, many fine versions of the piece--Bernstein/Decca, Klemperer/EMI, Walter/Decca, to name three favorites--but do consider Reiner's account as a top recommendation as well.
