Free Music Notes for 20th Century Masters: The Best Of The Mamas & The Papas (Millennium Collection)

Free Music Review: Love the album - disappointed in the companies
Hit: 5 Stars

I love the folk music of the '60s - it's inspirational, lively, and beautiful. The Mamas and the Papas fit that category to a T. Their autobiographical Creeque Alley is one of my favorites, as it gives you not only their history, but that of The Loving Spoonful and some of the members of the group and those who backed them.

But I know I'm not alone in the love of the album... I wanted to also vent my frustration at companies going "Green" and forcing us to do likewise. No more plastic cases to protect the discs, now they're starting to use paperboard. No more liner notes, now you have to go to a web site to see those. ("To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at [...].") And what happens when the web site goes away?

I date back far enough to know what an LP album is, and what the liner notes and "extras" for those included. You could get some albums with a beautifully colored record - the album might fold out, or include booklets containing the lyrics, photographs, posters, etc. Then the cassette came out, and they tried (and failed in most cases) to fit the same information into the case for the cassette.

Then they go back to a format containing a flat media (the CD) and a case that could show the same information as the original LPs without loss of anything but size. Loss in size I can deal with to a point... the discs that had albums that I had records for that had lyrics, you usually found they did a new layout, but contained all the same information.

Now, though, with all the "Green" movements, you can't buy a CD in a case that can protect it any longer... Even DVDs come in cases now that have cutouts in the plastic of the recycle symbol, and the back has a cutout in the shape of a movie canister... A fat lot of good protection a paper sleeve will be to your CDs, and the DVD cases almost don't exist, as you can poke anything through the top or bottom and scratch up your media. (It happened to me already.)

Now with the floods in the Midwest and Southeast of the U.S., I can only think, if those discs are in paper sleeves, they're as good as rotten, because the ink will ruin the media, or the paper will stick to it... you can't even recover the discs from the sleeves as you could have gotten them out of the plastic containers. That's the last thing those families will be thinking of right now, but it's still there.

For me, I guess I'll have to buy the discs... then some plastic CD containers to replace the paper crap, and either cut the paper or photocopy the sleeve for CD inserts, and try to make the booklets and liner notes to go in the cases with the disc. Thanks for making me green, UMA and MCA!

To celebrate being green, I think I'll pour a gallon of oil down the drain for every one of these paper sleeves I get from here on.

It's one thing to offer a way for people to get either one (two choices in the stores, or provide a means to send in your case for a paper sleeve, etc.) But to force it on people and make the discs, CD or DVD or BLU-RAY or whatever-comes-next, more vulnerable to damage... that proves they just want me to have to purchase the albums/movies again and again. What wonderful customer service.

- Jeff

PS: For the nitwits who don't see the sarcasm, I'm not really going to pour oil down the drain... why clog up my drain on their account?

20th Century Masters: The Best Of The Mamas & The Papas (Millennium Collection) Poster

The 20th Century Masters series is the best-selling single-artist line in music history and is being re-released by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) in its ground-breaking, environmentally-friendly packaging format. A first for the music industry, the standard package (both sleeve and tray) will be completely paper-recyclable, continuing the company's long-standing commitment to being "green."

To further reduce the amount of paper in the Eco-Pack, the CD booklet will no longer be offered. Official liner notes are easily accessible on the Internet at http://www.ilovethatsong.com/green.

UMe is the first North American music company to replace the traditional jewel case with recycled paperboard sleeves and the plastic tray with trays made from PaperFoam®, a new packaging technology from Shorewood Packaging, a business of International Paper, that is paper-recyclable and biodegradable. Shorewood Packaging is the first North American packaging supplier to produce disc trays from PaperFoam®.
The Mamas and the Papas blazed across the '60s folk-rock scene, scoring nine Top 40 hits in less than two years. So bright was their brief run that it earned them a berth in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This set shows at least some of the reason why--there's the era-defining hit "California Dreamin'," plus other triumphs such as "Monday, Monday," "Words of Love," "Dedicated to the One I Love," and the autobiographical "Creeque Alley." Perplexingly, the 20th Century Masters set substitutes "Dancing Bear" for "Glad to Be Unhappy," which was a bigger hit. Then too, the set is skimpy compared to their previously released Greatest Hits, but it does win points for including two Cass Elliot solo hits, "Make Your Own Kind of Music" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." --Daniel Durchholz
