Free Music Notes for GoldFree Music Review: Excellent Reproduction Hit: 4 Stars
Terrific songs; terrific group and faithful sound reproduction. Too short of a career but at least we have these recordings to recall this dynamic group of the Sixties.
Free Music Review: Mamas & The Papas - 'Gold' (Geffen) Hit: 3 Stars
Total of 32 tracks.Decent 2-CD compilation, specially for the price.Sound could be better. There are tunes here that I certainly don't remember. But,who could forget the hits? Most notable cuts include "Monday,Monday","Straight Shooter","I Call Your Name","California Dreamin'","Creeque Alley",the B-side "Look Through Any Window","The Right Somebody To Love" among others.Personally,I liked their box set 'Singles,Plus' better(see my review).Good for either the completist of any new fan.
Free Music Review: Poor Remastering Hit: 3 Stars
Although a great 2 CD collection the sound quality suffers from a bad remaster job. This became evident after comparing this CD to an older best of CD that I bought a number of years ago called "16 of Their Greatest Hits." The Gold recordings have the life sucked out them, no warmth and a harsh sound compared to the other compilation. Too bad because this has more depth in song selection.
Free Music Review: Okay Hit: 3 Stars
It's probably a great anthology. But for the occasional listener who doesn't know too much about the band, or wasn't really alive yet to appreciate, I'd suggest a shorter compilation. Personally, I think that this is a great collection, but I'd suggest the soundtrack to "Beautiful Thing" over this, with its plethora Mama Cass solo tracks.
Free Music Review: Best Of Hit: 3 Stars
This CD is o.k., I rented it at the library and ripped it on my XBOX hard drive. All their big hits are here, my favorite is California Dreamin'. Not bad for a 60s hippie group. It's o.k., just not aggressive enough to rate it higher than like a C grade.
