The Mamas and the Papas' music is something truly awe-inspiring. And most people find, when they sit down to write a review, that it's difficult to classify. Rather than shuffle it into some odd mix of a genre like "choral rock pop folk hippie jazz minstrel jump swing," it's much easier (and far more accurate) to just give it the title "beautiful music." Because that's what it is.
For a single disc compilation, Greatest Hits is absolutely packed to the brim with wonderful material that sounds great without being dated. It's an album you can just pop into the player without bothering with programming or track-skipping; you'll want to play every track. Then start it over and play every track again. It's a wonderful CD with wonderful music that'll bring you hours of enjoyment.

I was a very young teenager when the big hits were flowing from The Mamas and The Papas, and not alone does this great compilation bring all those back for me, but it introduces me to songs I had never heard performed by them. Their version of "Do You Wanna Dance" is beautiful, their "Dancin' In The Street" has a wonderful, tight rhythm section to underpin it; and the understated "My Girl" is so reminiscent of all the great hippie music that came from Frisco in the late sixties. The Mamas and The Papas created superb harmonies, they must have been so proud when listening to the final mixes. Now, with the great quality on this CD, we can hear subtleties that even they probably missed!Free Music Review: FIVE STARS.

The Mamas and the Papas are often mistakenly lumped into the pulpy group of late 60's folk rock as yet another featureless made-for-radio commodity. But songs such as I Call Your Name, Words of Love and Dream a Little Dream of Me are great art in its truest form. The inimitable and unmistakable voice of Mama Cass is what separates this group from the rest. Her strong, rich singing, best demonstrated on the first two songs above, refuses to take a backseat to any other element of the music, and provides the fortunate listener endless replay enjoyment.Free Music Review: This is a VERY good CD!

I really didn't understand why the Greatest Hits CD was revamped (besides the digital remastering) but I like it alot. A few songs were changed but songs were also addes....about 4 more. I'm a big Mamas & Papas fan. There are NO fillers on this album (as stated in another testament) because the best of the Mamas & Papas are on this CD. What's missing is the song, 'The Love of Ivy' but disregarding that, it is very worth purchasing. If you like their well known hits such as california Dreamin', Monday Monday, etc., you'll like the album.
