Free Music Notes for Mame (1966 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Two of my favourite women Hit: 5 Stars
A very good musical cd, songs performed by the thrilling lady called Angela Lansbury! She simply does a fabolous job potraying the sassy women known as Mame. Angela's vocal is strong and clear, very mature singing voice, she cuts through with the peak of emotions. Vera Charles, Mame's best freind is being portrayed by the wonderful golden girl Bea Arthur! You haven't lived until you've heard Bea belting out "Bosom Buddies" with Angela Lansbury, and her big theatrical number "The Man In The Moon. Her vocal is deeep and throaty, but can reach to an surprising high key, matched perfectly with Angela's chipper vocal. As the title implies, two of my favourite women ever! I simply adore them. Angela Lansbury I've been kind "reserved" about, her long career in both stage and movie performences are all to be remembered, and Angela has even starred opposite Judy Garland once in the movie "The Harvey Girls". And of course her legendary performence in A Murder, She Wrote. Bea Arthur has also done quite a bit of theater work, she started her career in the Off-Broadway show called The Shoestring Revue, and has since then participated in such legendary shows as The Threepenny Opera and Fiddler On The Roof. She's also starred opposite a legend, Lotta Lenya, the legendary german cabaret singer in The Threepenny Opera.

Wow...where to begin. I've been thinking about writing this review since I auditioned. I stumbled across MAME in a small CD store. I knew I was going to audition for it, and I spontaniously bought it. I began to doubt my purchase, but as soon as I played the overture, I knew my money waswell spent.MAME is gorgeous. Although I doubted it, Angela Landsbury plays the role FLAWLESSLY on this CD. If you don't believe me, listen to her version of "If he Walked Into My Life" it'll bring you close to tears...especially the line(s) "Though I'll ask myself my whole life long what went wrong along the way, would I make the same mistakes" It's great hearing Bea Arthur sing...she and Angie make Bosom Buddies truly memorable. Jane Connell gives a wonderful performance as Gooch. Listen to "We Need a Little Christmas" for harmony of the whole cast. The others are wonderful too. And then of course, there's the title song "MAME" I'm speachless. It's so (at a loss for words)...It's refreshing...the cast starts out soft, but they grow louder...there's a man and a woman who harmonize quite well *and loudly* in the last chorus. The curtain call music wraps everything up, I almost cry when I hear it...it's so beautiful. Jerry Herman really outdid himself with this one.
Free Music Review: Angela was and will always be MAME Hit: 5 Stars
One of the great, legendary broadway performances of all time, and you can sense it from the CD. The score is pure 60's broadway fare, better than Hello Dolly. Every song is catchy, some have become downright classics. And every song and every moment work.
The film version totally sinks under Lucille Ball. What should have been a madcap tunefest, is a lugubrious, plodding mess, thanks to Lucy. Not her fault, she was totally miscast. But Warner Bros. and Jack Warner had a history of ruining film musicals in order to cast big names. Think Roz Russell in Gypsy, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, Vanessa Redgrave in Camelot. They wanted to cast Cary Grant (who flat out refused, and threatened not to see it) in place of Robert Preston in The Music Man. All talented performers, usually dubbed, but lacking something that the originals had. Think of how perfect My Fair Lady would have been with Julie Andrews? And how marvelous Mame could have been had Lansbury (who was a bona fide movie star) recreated the role. Bea Arthur did recreate her part and very nearly steals the whole film. (As did Jane Connell as Gooch)
But the original stage musical, as close to perfection as it could get!
And incidentally, Mame contains one of the most exciting overtures ever recorded for a broadway show!
Free Music Review: BRILLIANT!!! YET, DISAPPOINTING!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
I can't tell you how thrilled I was to learn, that FINALLY, a restored and remastered "Mame" cd was coming out. I have done the show several times on various national tours and am a huge Jerry Herman fan. The musical is brilliant - but.........I was very, very disappointed with what was "restored." The added demo recordings with Jerry Herman at the piano singing the original lyrics are nice enough, but, couldn't they have released all the musical numbers in their entirety??????? The only thing that was "restored" was the trumpet entrance for Mame at the beginning of "It's Today." One of the greatest pieces of music from the show is the burst of jazz that ends "St. Bridget" and immediately goes into "It's Today" before Mame's grand entrance. "It's Today" and "Open A New Window" are very, very shortened versions of the actual numbers. "Open A New Window" is missing many, many things including the tango number, the modern dance sequence and the artist's modeling number!!!! Advertising this as a "restored" cd was completely false Music Review: Musical for All Time Hit: 5 Stars
This is the musical to end all musicals...wonderful score by Mr. Herman, wonderful performances, book, staging, orchestrations...what else can I say!! I bought this album and became familiar with it in 1966 soon after the musical premiered....I had seen Auntie Mame, the movie in the 50's and was enchanted with the play in 1966...Angela Lansbury gives an exciting performance and actually her voice grew on me...I didn't go for it at first, but soon loved it as she has her own style...I must comment on the roadshow engagements of the play I saw, as I do in my other reviews..I saw Jane Morgan in the part at the St. Louis Muny in the late 60's and I believe she was a Broadway replacement for a short period during the first run!! I also saw Juliet Prowse shortly before she died in a roadshow engagement here in the midwest..she was very talented and I think her dancing outdid her singing in the part!! Very good!!
