Free Music Notes for Mame (1966 Original Broadway Cast)

Free Music Review: Great Fun
Hit: 5 Stars

This is Jerry Herman's best score--a bit desperate to be loved, sure; a bit overblown at times, but always fun, clever, and tuneful. And it's brilliantly performed here. To answer the complaint below: Thomas Shepard (who supervised the reissue) makes it clear in the booklet note that aside from that one trumpet blast in "It's Today," there was no extra material on the tapes. In other words, the full version of "Open a New Window" can't be restored because it was never recorded to begin with. That's the way it goes when trying to cut a score down to fit onto a 50 minute LP (and besides, Goddard Lieberson liked to shorten numbers sometimes, cutting out dance music and dialogue in order to make for a more satisfying home-listening experience). But what's important is that the sound is much improved over the previous release. Get it.

Free Music Review: Jerry Herman - Great Melodies that Live On
Hit: 5 Stars

Mame started out as a novel by Patrick Dennis in 1955, was made into a straight play by Lawrence and Lee that was turned into a non-musical movie with Rosalind Russell. Then this musical by Jerry Herman with Angela Lansbury as the Beekman Place guru was created, and it ended up a movie musical, a bomb with a miscast Lucille Ball. Talk about recycling good material!
Herman writes tuneful, catchy numbers that become the anthems of his shows. Mame and Dolly are bigger than life eccentric characters that caught the imaginations of theatergoers. The songs in this show "Open a New Window", "We Need a Little Christmas", the signature song "Mame", "Bosom Buddies" with Bea Arthur, and the show's eleven o'clock number "If He Walked into My Life" live on. It's full of memorable, singable, lovable songs and great melodies. Always worth another listen.

Free Music Review: Columbia has done it again
Hit: 5 Stars

This is a wnderfull CD. The songs and lyrics by Jerry Herman are fantastic, particularly "If He Waklked Into My Life Today," "My Best Girl," and "Open a New Window." Angela Lansbury is stellar as the free spitited Auntie Mame, making a signiture role out of a character that was allready a signiture role for Rosilin Russel. The rest of the cast is above par as well and manages to make the classic score come to life. Also of note are the bonus trakcs that feature Jerry Herman singing the shows songs on a backer's tape. Unlike some other Columbian bonus tracks, these are actually bearable. Herman is an adequate singer, and the appaerntly cut song "Cameflouge" is intreging to say the least. This is your typical broadway musical, complete with style, wit, and pizazz.

Free Music Review: This is what a show album should be!
Hit: 5 Stars

Great, memorable songs. Phil Lang's orchestrations and Donald Pippin's choral arrangements are spectacular. Pippin's musical direction is positively energetic.

Lansbury, Arthur, et al, are superb. The ensemble sounds super-charged. The title song is one of the greatest production numbers ever recorded. You want to give it a standing ovation just listening to the recording.

The CD, just like the old LP, does justice to the score.

In short, brilliant (both in the smart and the radiant sense of the word.) If you've only seen the movie, forget about it and get this CD. If you're unfamiliar with the show, get this CD. An absolute must for anyone who likes musical comedy. They don't make them like this anymore.

Free Music Review: Angela is "just sensational".
Hit: 5 Stars

Angela Lansbury is perfectly cast as Auntie Mame. She sings beautifully and her character shines through every song. She received tremendous critical praise and won a Tony for this role. A previous reviewer said that people were "unfairly bashing" Lucille Ball's version. I am going to be fair about this issue. I love Lucy, but her version of MAME is the absolute worst on cd. Lucy simply could not sing. In addition, by the time she made the movie she was quite old, and her voice croaked dreadfully through every song. I will not let my admiration of Lucy's great comedic talents overrule my judgement. For the best MAME on cd, get the original Broadway cast album starring the legendary Angela Lansbury.
