Free Music Notes for Mame (1966 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Brilliant! Hit: 5 StarsI am reviewing the original issue, not the remastered one. I couldn't find the original issue listed. Anyway, Angela Lansbury stars in her finest role. Listen to IF HE WALKED INTO MY LIFE, IT'S TODAY, and OPEN A NEW WINDOW and you'll believe me. Plus Beatrice Arthur is great with BOSOM BUDDIES and the whole cast is great with MAME. All-in-all, you need to buy either this version or the remastered version, because MAME is the musical to have.
Free Music Review: An A for Angela! Hit: 4 StarsLansbury stars in this show with Beatrice Arthur. The music is show-stopping and "Mame" deserves a huge applause.
Free Music Review: Great fun, and wonderfully sung by Angela Lansbury Hit: 5 StarsThough it was just re-released as a CD with restored material, essentially this recording was made in 1966 and is therefore the oldest one I've ever heard. It doesn't show its age one bit; not only is the sound clear, but the musical numbers are just as fun today as they seem to have been in '66. The tunes and lyrics are very catchy and memorable. The vocals are performed very well. And then there's Angela Lansbury, who's more than enough reason for listening to this. Her energetic belting out of the songs is amazing, considering she'd only been in one other musical before this, Anyone Can Whistle. It's no wonder that, as her biography Balancing Act makes clear, this musical alone turned her from being a supporting player into a genuine, bona fide STAR. I do wish I could have seen her in the role, (Unfortunatly, she was not cast in the film, and was replaced by Lucille Ball, who not only doesn't belong in the role, but whose clunky singing really bogs it down.) but this recording more than compensates. If you haven't gotten the message yet, GET THIS CD! You'll be singing the songs happily for days, I guarantee you. One small quibble: In several of the songs, such as the delightful It's Today and Opon a New Window, the chorus keeps getting repeated, over and over again. But, oh, well. It's worth it. Rosalind Russell went down in history as the definitive screwball comedy Mame, and for good reason. Also for good reason, Anglea Lansbury has gone down in history as the definitive musical Mame. Listen to this and you'll see why.
Free Music Review: FANTASTIC REMASTER OF A CLASSIC Hit: 5 StarsI am so happy that Sony has decided to remaster MAME. I own the previous version which was made from an album master, and this new mastering is clear, quiet, and every instrument in place and sounding beautiful. The extras (demos by Jerry Herman) are nice as an extra, but this musical sparkles compared to its film version (which was quite sad, to say the least). Any broadway fan of "old fashioned" broadway tunes will adore this one, if you own the old version, use it as a frisbee, this is a sheer audible delight. I hope Sony continues this trend!
Free Music Review: Great Fun Hit: 5 StarsThis is Jerry Herman's best score--a bit desperate to be loved, sure; a bit overblown at times, but always fun, clever, and tuneful. And it's brilliantly performed here. To answer the complaint below: Thomas Shepard (who supervised the reissue) makes it clear in the booklet note that aside from that one trumpet blast in "It's Today," there was no extra material on the tapes. In other words, the full version of "Open a New Window" can't be restored because it was never recorded to begin with. That's the way it goes when trying to cut a score down to fit onto a 50 minute LP (and besides, Goddard Lieberson liked to shorten numbers sometimes, cutting out dance music and dialogue in order to make for a more satisfying home-listening experience). But what's important is that the sound is much improved over the previous release. Get it.
