Free Music Notes for Man of La Mancha (1973 Movie Soundtrack)Free Music Review: Terrible Hit: 1 Stars
After reading some positive reviews here, I bought this CD. Boy was that a mistake.
This CD wouldn't be so bad if any of the performers could actually sing. For any professional recording there is an expectation of a minimum level of competency. With the exception of the guy playing the role of the priest, none of the performers on this CD is up to the challenge. The pitch problems are so bad, I just can't listen to it. I've listened to the whole thing a few times, but now it sits on a shelf gathering dust. No amount of "passion" can make up for singing off key and lacking a pleasant tone. Heck, I could sing most of these better than the folks on this CD.
I reject the dichotomy presented by some reviewers that you can either have a CD with an expressive yet technically lacking performance or you can have a CD with a lifeless yet technically proficient performance (as if vocal professionals are not trained to express emotion via their voice). There are recordings of this music that have both. This is not one of them.
I also don't get the argument that this recording is somehow more "real" because a real kitchen wench wouldn't be able to sing. If there's one thing I've learned in 20 years of working with volunteer (ie. unpaid) church choirs it's that a natural ability to sing isn't restricted to any particular socio-economic level.
I think some of you all have an attachment to the movie that colors your review of the soundtrack.
