Free Music Notes for Man of La Mancha (2002 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: Stokes' Wonderful Dream Hit: 5 Stars
Playing Don Quixote has been Stokes' dream since he was a teenager, and he hoped he would get the chance in a dinner theater somewhere someday. Talk about a dream coming true! He is absolutely amazing in this show, especially with the songs "Dulcinea" and "Impossible Dream." I saw this production twice, once in Washington DC w/ Mastrantonio, who sings Dulcinea on this recording, and once in NYC with Marin Mazzie. Marin was truely wonderful in this show and its a shame that her voice isn't on this recording instead of the merely adequate Mastrantonio. There hasn't been as great a Broadway team as Marin and Stokes since Lunt and Fontaine and I hope this won't be the last time we see them together. Even though Marin isn't on this recording I still highly recommend it, Stokes is amazing, as is Ernie Sabella and the rest of the supporting cast including Mark Jacoby and Don Mayo.
Free Music Review: The Man of the Mancha shines Hit: 5 Stars
I saw this show for the first time at the National theater in Washington, DC. I've seen several musicals and shows throughout my lifetime but none have ever filled me with as much emotion as this one. I could "feel" the music and the passion on stage. Brian Stokes Mitchell did an amazing job, even better than his performance in Ragtime (which I saw also).I left the show, crying because of the beauty of it, amazed, and humming the words. My theater director once said to me that if you leave a show humming the words, you've been affected by it. You were taken into their world. Let The Man of La Mancha take you as well. It's a very powerful story, symbolic in nature, and has a cast that fills you with emotions. The CD is a way of letting you live that experience over and over again. To tell you the truth, thats something I'd love to do. "To dream the impossible dream."
Free Music Review: A Great "Don Quixote" Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a fan of the "Man of La Mancha" for years. I love the songs and the message, even if the story-line is a bit awkward. It is great story that deals with hope, faith and idealism. The music is wonderful evoking Old Spain, but also with lyrics that are profound in the emotions and dreams that are captured.
I only knew of Brian Stokes Mitchell from a minor role he played on "Trapper John M.D." back in the 1980s (at first I didn't realize that it was the same guy). Mitchell and company do a fantastic job of bringing this narrative to life. I found the new introduction to be very imaginative and it captured a sense of fire: the fire of Don Quixte's idealism and Dulcenia's fire of passion and pain.

Free Music Review: Better than the original!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Oh, i can't believe the reviewer below absolutley hated this c.d! I mean, the music is beautiful, and the signing is more pleasing to listen to than the original Broadway cast. I am so glad I chose this c.d rather than the original, for the original is to "operaish" for my taste, and Aldonza in the original seems to struggle with her high notes. Brian Stokes Mitchel is a wondeful singer, and he truly emphasizes "Impossible Dream" for what it really is. Mary Mastrniniieyeireyley-watsherface is a wonderful Aldonza, and in the reprise of Dulciena and Impossible Dream, at the end, is such a strong piece that it made me cry! So for La Mancha fans out there, if you are thinking of buying one of the 2 versions, get this one... you wont regret it! Buy the original, and you will!
Free Music Review: I preferred this version Hit: 5 Stars
Having heard both the Original Cast and Revival Cast recordings--and having seen Stokes Mitchell perform the play on Broadway--I prefer this version. As someone else pointed out, the Kiley version sounds too "operatic." To me, the Original Cast version also sounds more measured and "intentional," and thus less passionate, spontaneous, and real.
Along with other reviewers, I feel Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio has been bashed unfairly: as someone else mentioned, when it seems like her voice is struggling it's because her character is struggling. It is this overall verisimilitude that makes the Revival Cast more appealing to me.
And, yeah, Stokes Mitchell is brilliant as Don Quixote.
