Free Music Notes for Man of La Mancha (2002 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: Brian Stokes Mitchell steals the show!! Hit: 4 Stars
This version of Man of La Mancha would have gotten five stars from me if Brian Stokes Mitchell sang every song. He is the star and quite rightfully so. Not only does this man desperately need to put out a solo CD, he brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear "Dulcinea" or "The Impossible Dream". A listener can tell he puts his heart and soul into every note he sings. Mary Elisabeth Mastrontonio is a mediocre Aldonza. Some of her notes sound like a struggle and she is not on equal ground with Stokes. A comprable singer would have been someone like Linda Eder. She would have sung beatiful life into Aldonza. The rest of the vocalists are on par with other Broadway recordings, but it is Brian Stokes Mitchell that stands out above and beyond everyone else.
Free Music Review: My wife was right ! Hit: 4 Stars
We attended the May 21, 2003 performance at the Martin Beck Theatre, primarily because my wife wanted to see Brian Stokes Mitchell. I was lukewarm to the idea but (like the rest of the audience) I was swept away by this magnificent and inspirational production. The cast was very good, but Mary Elizabeth M. and Mitchell were clearly the stars who shined brightest. They gave it everything they had and the audience responded with sustained applause and emotion. We were close enough to the stage (Row 5) to see the fire in the eyes of the cast members and it was apparent they knew they were part of something special. The only thing Man of La Mancha lacks is consistently good music. Three great numbers is not enough to merit 5 stars.
Free Music Review: Wonderful Show! Wonderful Music! Good CD... Hit: 4 Stars
I love this show and the music. When I heard it was going to be revived I was very excited and bought tickets immediately. The show in comparison to the CD is excellent. Brian Stokes Mitchell was amazing as usual and carries the show by himself. On the CD, he makes the songs his own and really captures the listener. Mary Elizabeth has her moments, however there are parts where she's lacking the strength or emotion needed. I think Sancho is just great...or pumbaa should I say...he's hilarious and all though his voice is not the best we've heard, you can tell that he works hard and makes up for it in many other ways. Overall, I give this CD 4 stars because it's missing that certain something that could make it excellent.
Free Music Review: Great cd, even greater show!!! Hit: 4 Stars
Saw the performance this past Saturday night, April 26th -- it was absolutely stunning and Brian Stokes Mitchell is positively superb! The set was also incredible - took us back to the days of the Inquisition at first sight - just remarkable.Mastrantonio is also impressive - I think her voice sounds a bit more 'tinny' on the cd - she is much better on stage. I must also recommend the Padre - his rendition of "To Each His Dulcinea" is gorgeous! This cd is worth having simply for the performance of Stokes Mitchell - his singing reaches a new level of emotion and strength here - especially on the title song, Dulcinea and The Impossible Dream - his is the new gold standard!
Free Music Review: Saw the show and it was amazing...nthing like seeing it. Hit: 4 Stars
Now I saw the show recently with Stokes Mitchell and Sabella. And Marin Mazzie played the part of Aldonza. Now, I know Mastrantonio was nominated for the Tony...but Mazzie sings so much better...she has a perfectly controlled soprano and belt, while Mastrantonio more a less has a bland voice with a shrill vibrato and no legato, it all comes out choppy. Mazzie is also to and Actress and been nominated 3 times for Tony...it is a shame her voice isn't preserved on recording...but the show was exquisite...and am seeing it for a second time before it closes on August 31st. Hope everyone gets a chance to see it with Marin in the lead.
