Free Music Notes for Man of La Mancha: A Decca Broadway Original Cast Album (Original 1965 Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Brilliant & beautiful on several levels Hit: 5 Stars
I was raised on the original LP of this musical, was taken to local productions as a teenager, and read Cervantes after college. The themes presented here are timeless--never give up hope, maintain integrity even in the face of most adversity and danger, and look for the inner beauty that everyone has to offer--among them. These ideals are presented by the cast with such conviction, such vigor--whether it be Kiley's "Impossible Dream" or Diener's "It's all the same," or "Aldonza."
Free Music Review: Sensational Hit: 5 Stars
As is usually the case, the original Broadway cast version, now in remastered sound, is the best production of this incredibly funny and poignant take off on Don Quixote. Richard Kiley is absolutely magnificent playing the wonderfully crazy Don who in his madness sets out to rid the world of evil. The Impossible Dream is Kiley's song alone, no successor is worthy. Irving Jacobsen is hysterical as Sancho Panza with a Yiddish twist, and the rest of the cast is fine as well.
Free Music Review: Bravo Joan Diener! Hit: 5 Stars
The review on this page criticizing Joan Diener's performance is pretty awful. Wonder what the motive is here. I recently bought the remastered recording and think her performance is one of the loveliest, most heartfelt ones in Broadway history. Interesting, too, to realize that the play really is her story. I didn't get this when I was 15 and heard the recording for the first time. Definitely worth the investment, if for no other reason than to hear Joan Diener as Aldonza.
Free Music Review: Great Music - But different from the original album Hit: 5 Stars
I found the album version of this in college and loved everything about it, from the edgy Aldonza to the humorous Sancho. Beware, the album had much of the play's dialog on it which the CD lacks. Even so I'm happy to have the music back in my collection. My family appropriately thinks I'm a little crazy as I sing along loudly when I listen to the music.
Free Music Review: Still Wonderful Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this for a friend that was not familiar with the story about Don Quixote. I spent many hours during my high school years listening to this performance and it still brings tears to my eyes. I recommend this to anyone that has never heard it. I suggest that you sit back, relax and devote 45 uninterrupted minutes to share in the "quest".
