I have read many reviews and it seems that not many people accepted this new album. I totally disagree. Mana has great stuff from the past but I also think that every album the put out it good in its own way. Just because they have guitars doesnt mean that all of their music has to be strictly hard core spanish rock. People dont understand that there's so much more to spanish music than pop and rock. It's about having that latin influence that makes spanish music what it is, not just singing in spanish and calling it spanish rock. I do admit that there are a few songs that you want to skip all the time while listening, but I think the rest of the album makes up for those few. Here are a few words about the songs:
.Justicia Tierra y Libertad - The banging low drums just give this a very powerful feel that makes you wanna MOVE! ( again has that latin swing)
.Ay Doctor - You really have to listen tho the lyrics to get into it. It doesnt have that great of a beat at first but after a few plays you kinda wanna sing along cuz we can all probably relate!
.Fe - Again listen to the lyrics and you'll feel like a true activist! It's about all thats wrong with humanity and how we gotta have faith
.Sabanas Frias - Has a more tropical feel but is very catch and grea beat. (wish the radio stations wouldnt play it every 30 minutes, then people might appreciate Manas music more)
.Pobre Juan - Leaves an everlasting impression about the severe problems about vulnerable immigrants from Latin America comming to America hoping for a better life. If you've seen this performed live I'm sure you can all understand how you feel so sad yet enjoy the music at the same time.
.Porque Te Vas? - This is one of those songs that you wanna skip! Slow and agonizing. Begging for an answer as to why she left. This one could have been left in the studio!
.Mariosa Traicionera - Really hits the spot! Sure everyone has gone through this. but again I wish they didnt play it so much on the radio.
.Sin Tu Carino - Slow and catchy lyrics but not all that great.
.Eres Mi Religion - Great mellow rock song. Meaningful lyrics, one of my personal favorites but it's overplayed on the radio.
.No Voy a ser Tu esclavo - awesome Latin beat something like sabanas frias. Great "I'm standing up for myself" kind of song!! Makes you wanna scream it out to and ex- b/f or g/f!
.Angel De Amor - Awesome like eres mi religion, more rock feel but again overplayed.
.Nada que Perder - More up beat punk kinda song. Its ok but not one of my favorite pics
Free Music Review: This is a very Profound Album! Enjoy! Hit: 5 Stars
Revolución de Amor is yet another solid album by Maná! There's been a "revolución", but their classic style still reigns: Maná continues to write great songs about the ups and downs of love and tackle tough social issues against a backdrop of passionate, rockin' melodies. It's a winning formula! In this album, Fher eloquently addresses the "respeto para el indio y su dignidad" in Justicia, Tierra, y Libertad. I did not expect them to open the concert (when they stopped in Santa Barbara on their tour) with this song. (I expected the hard- rocking hit "Angel de Amor".) When they opened with "Justicia, Tierra, y Libertad" and the images of Rigoberta Menchú and Comandante Marcos, Martin Luther King, la Virgen, and many other important figures appeared on the projection screen, they sent a message to me that they are very serious about their social conscience. Alex contributes a gem of a song in "Fé". Everyone struggles with their faith at one point or another. This song sounds like a prayer to try to keep the faith, asking God to "dáme fé...dáme fuerza", wondering how close is God considering "este mundo como es". When I listen to the haunting "Pobre Juan", I vividly remember from the concert all of the white crosses with names of people who have died, strewn across the border. Another album highlight is when Alex sings solo the whole song and in the last chorus in the catchy, underrated "Sin Tu Cariño", Fher comes out of nowhere and joins in, "Ay...no sé qué voy a hacer sin tu cariño, no, no, no!" It's just a perfect example of the magical teamwork Fher, Alex, and the rest of the band perform. This album has inspired me to appreciate other cultures and leave behind my white Anglo-Saxon view of the world.
Free Music Review: An advance beyond their past Hit: 5 Stars
I realize that I'm operating at a disadvantage in reviewing this CD. I don't speak Spanish (although I took it in high school and college) and I haven't followed Maná throughout their career. I'm just an late-arriving Americano who appreciates good music whatever its country of origin.
Nevertheless, I was blown away by this CD's sound: its harmony, arrangement, and emotion. In fact, I was blown away enough to order the 3-CD set of their earlier CDs on Warner, based on Amazon reviewers' raves about their earlier work. I can appreciate where those reviewers were coming from, but I still like "Revolucion de Amor" the best.
For my money, the earlier Maná was a worthy band in the Police vein, but a bit minimalist. This CD, where they arguably went corporate (or whatever), fleshes out their potential and really delivers.
Hey, even with English-language bands, I usually place the lyrics in the background and concentrate on the overall sound. On that count, this CD delivers as much as, say, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or the Sisters of Mercy or Procol Harum or Phil Spector's girl groups. Solid harmonies, good musicianship, great balance.
That may just be succumbing to the allures of pop production, but good pop is all too rare, ironically enough.
I hope that the band is working on another CD, three years on, and look forward to what they come up with.
Free Music Review: Can Mana Do No Wrong or What ?... Hit: 5 Stars
After 5 years without an album since 1997's Suenos Liquidos (Liquid Dreams) Mana has not missed a beat ! Lead member Fehr is sill in top vocal and writing form. He is the Latin equivalent of Sting (vocally). One listen to the first track Justicia, Tierra, y Libertad (Justice, Land, and Liberty/Freedom)will convince new listeners of this ! The rhythms are rich and vibrant with pounding percussion and guitar laden hooks. There are various musical styles (both underlying and upfront) consisting of Carribean, reggae, soft alternative to the last semi alternative ska-like rock track entitled Nada que perder (Nothing to Lose). The captivating mid tempo love ballad Mariposa tracionera (Treacherous Butterfly ) is simply AWESOME ! In rough English terms the song is about a treacherous, woman who betrays her lover by cheating on him. For those who do not understand Spanish, just simply listening to the music would make the listener think it is a beautiful song about a sweet romance...not ! Yet, Mana is able to take these sad lyrics and give them an enchanting melodic feel... This may be the project that will bring Mana to higher heights, yet (especially in America)!
