Free Music Notes for Know Your Enemy

Free Music Review: Totally under rated LP
Hit: 5 Stars

The Manics have produced many great pieces of music, but only two complete albums - The Holy Bible, and Know Your Enemy. After the majesty and totally devastating Holy Bible, and the subsequent 'loss' of Richie Edwards the Manics went into a serious slump with their next two albums. I've never understood the popularity of 'Everything Must Go', it has some good tracks but is pretty disappointing, and the lacklustre 'Truth' was the band in a serious rut. 'Know Your Enemy' changed all that. Here are the Manics back to their politically challenging and musically diverse best. My only criticism of the album lies in the some of the production techniques, but overall, this a gritty, brilliant album that too many people have missed out on. The stand-out tracks - 'Let Robeson Sing', 'Found That Soul', 'Wattsville Blues', 'Ocean Spray', 'So Why So Sad' - are as good as anything they've ever done, and the seamless nature of the album creates a feeling that the album is greater than the sum of its parts, and that is the sign of a truly fine record.

Free Music Review: Can Anyone Make A Difference Anymore?
Hit: 5 Stars

Through the magic of Amazon UK, I've actually had the cd for a while, and I have to say how superior it is to This Is My Truth.., and a harkening to the Holy Bible Era. Firstly, while Nicky Wire's lyrics have never reached the same intensity as Richey James', his words seem to be evolving to his own style on this cd, especially notable on His Last Painting and Wattsville Blues, which he also takes lead vocals on. However, his monotonous drone seems to show that he should stick to writing, not singing. James Dean Bradfield's unbelievable guitar skills are really the device that pushes the the cd though, with notable cases being Ms. Europa Disco Dancer, a campy satire of the 70's, and My Guernica. However, there must be some Irony that on a CD with 16 new Manics cd's, my favourite song is the hidden cover of We Are All Bourgeois Now. Still, the cd is brilliant, and it's good to see the band returning to it's roots.

Free Music Review: A time for celebrating
Hit: 5 Stars

While waiting for this album, I was not sure if it was going to be up to par with the other Manics albums. Whenever a band says "we hated ourselves on the last album, we're doing something different" or "this is the best stuff we've ever done", it always makes you worried that it is going to be the biggest load of crap ever. Luckily, after recieveing this album from the lovely amazon.co.uk, I found that Nicky Wire didn't lie about the quality after all! With the exception of 2 songs, this album is up to par with everything else they've done. And, with the exception of Intrenevous Agnostic, the lyrics are some of the best they've ever done as well. I think it could be also a great introduction album to the Manics. The album is diverse enough to allow almost anyone to pick a track they like. All in all, a very enjoyable album that should dissappoint no one.

Free Music Review: An album of character
Hit: 5 Stars

Although many think that this album is a waste of time, history will show this to be a classic for MSP. Infact, every album of theirs fits into that catagory. Highlights include "Found that soul" , "Royal correspondant", "Freedom of speech..." This album works not only b/c the manics recorded it, but because it has a tone that is altogether bleak and energizing, but w/ a diversity that HOLY BIBLE does not have. Check out "Let Robeson Sing", clever lyrics..."went to cuba to meet castro, never got past sleepy moscow"...Kinda like a modern U2 w/o the annoyance. For newer fans also check out another overlooked masterpiece "Gold Against The Soul" which is much better than their debut!!!
Viva le Manics!!! -Kenneth

Free Music Review: Manics still have it
Hit: 5 Stars

After a couple of milder albums, the Manic Street Preachers are back at it and better than ever. Though they will never again recapture the strange, pre-Richey-Edwards-disappearace glory of The Holy Bible, with tracks like Intravenous Agnostic and My Guernica, who wants them to? This album won't break into mainstream American radio--it has too much soul, integrity and politial contrversy to appeal to the common music fan. By their own admission, the Manics won't last much longer--and with Know Your Enemy, it's clear how much we will lose when they go.
