Free Music Notes for Mannheim Steamroller: Christmas SongFree Music Review: A Mannheim Christmas Hit: 5 Stars
OK! Here we go! A brand new Christmas CD by Mannheim Steamroller! I absolutely LOVE their sound. It's so unique, so cute, so airy and lively. It often sounds sort of medieval with synthesized sounds and percussion and keyboard and lots of different sounds and unique arrangements. They are big on percussion sounds and they are unlike any other group I have ever heard.
When I hear the Steamroller, I often get an immediate visualization of a huge banquet hall in a huge castle, about 30 (50 lb) roasted turkeys, lots of wine, and knights with turkey legs in their hands gnawing on them. There is music everywhere in the castle and everyone is having a wonderful time. There is much cheer and happiness, as if they are all celebrating a massive victory. There is dancing and some of the knights are just a wee bit drunk, but they are relatively well behaved as they are falling over tables and only a few passing out.
There are 12 tracks, many representing traditional Christmas songs. Total time for the album runs a little under 45 minutes. Traditional songs are "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow," "The Christmas Song" [Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire . . . ] featuring Johnny Mathis, "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town," "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear," "Feliz Navidad," "Frosty The Snowman," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
"Catching Snowflakes on Your Tongue," "Masters In This Hall," "Above The Northern Lights," "Traditions of Christmas," and "Christmas Lullaby," featuring Olivia Newton-John are the other songs on the album.
They have a wonderful sound, wonderful arrangements and it's great to hear Mannheim do a lot of the traditional songs in their unique style. Definitely unique and definitely a winner! This CD is out just in time for the holidays. Mannheim is one of the few groups/artists I would actually go out of my way to see in concert and I did go to see Mannheim last year. If you've never heard Mannheim, I think you really should check them out. They also make a great Christmas gift for a music lover.
Free Music Review: Christmas Cheer Hit: 5 Stars
As a previous reviewer mentioned last year, Rush Limbaugh was indeed the one who introduced Mannheim Steamroller to much of the country. He once played the music video for 'Pat-A-Pan' on his TV show back in the mid-90s and I was a fan for life from that point. The amount of emotion that comes across from Chip Davis to the listener is absolutely astounding to me. I now have ALL his Christmas albums including The Christmas Angel (both the DVD of the TV production and the CD soundtrack)
Mannheim Steamroller - The Christmas Angel: A Story on Ice
as well as the DVD-Audio discs that he produced by setting up microphones around his back yard, then putting the birdsong to music (in 5.1 Surround, no less!), and the fantastical DVD-Audio of Mannheim Steamroller Meets The Mouse - Chip's tribute to the classic music of Disney films. Personally, I can't wait for the next one and wish I could afford to go to one of the live shows during their annual Christmas tours. Last year I actually had the money but couldn't get off from work. This year I got laid off on Oct 2nd so will have the time, but no money by then. It's a lose-lose situation, I guess.
Sigh...
My only comments on the quality of this release are that although the vocal tracks from Johnny Mathis and Olivia Newton-John were not necessary on an album that's supposed to be instrumental, their talents are not wasted here. They are two of the best voices ever to grace a record. I didn't even know that there WERE lyrics to Christmas Lullaby, but Miss Newton-John's performance is wonderful. The original Christmas Lullaby instrumental is a work of genius and one of my all-time favorites. While it doesn't lull me to sleep, it does touch me emotionally and brings back childhood Christmas memories.
Free Music Review: Nicely Done! Hit: 5 Stars
I really enjoyed this new release with the new stuff and some retooled classic Steamroller Christmas!
My faves:
2. The Christmas Song, even though I can't usually tolerate Johnny Mathis...I loved this one!
4. It Came Upon a Midnight Clear...Beautiful!
5. Feliz Navidad...Tired of the song in it's old form, and I am so glad it got "Steamrollered"! It's awesome in this collection.
10. Traditions of Christmas...Recycled, but pretty in music box style. Too short though!
11. Christmas Lullaby...THE BEST! I loved it instrumental in its previous form...Add some Olivia Newton-John...Magic. My favorite track.
12. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas...It's just nice.
There were some skippable tracks, and I find at least 2 on every Steamroller album. They're just not my style, and I'm OK with it.
Free Music Review: what is the matter with some people Hit: 5 Stars
Why do some people think that every single song on a cd has to meet their expectations? I think as a whole this is a great new cd by Mannheim Steamroller. My favorite is "Let it Snow", but I like the rest of the arrangements also. When I first heard Mannheim Steamroller over 15 years ago, I thought what unusual arrangements of the classic carols. Now everyone that hears the "Silent Night" arrangement knows it immediately that it is Mannheim Steamroller. I think that in the future "Let it Snow" will be just as recognizable. Just listening to it starts to get me into the Christmas spirit. This cd will be played over and over with my other Mannheim Steamroller cds when we have company in the back ground and in the forefront while I make cookies and wrap presents. It is really a great new Christmas tradition.
Free Music Review: Mannheim mastermind Chip Davis Hit: 5 Stars
I enjoy Méhdi"Christmas Treasures", Charlie Brown Christmas, Josh Groban etc. and this a magnificent production that I also enjoy just as much. Mannheim Steamroller's first all-new holiday album in six years features the legendary Johnny Mathis singing the "Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting)," as well as Olivia Newton-John in "Christmas Lullaby," a beautiful new song penned by Mannheim mastermind Chip Davis. Other selections include dynamic arrangements of the Yuletide favorites "Let it Snow," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Frosty the Snowman," and more.
