I made a mistake in my previous review (i hope you'll forgive : it was my first on ...). Clandestino did not stay "almost 2 years" in the French album chart but in fact is STILL N°2 almost 3 years after his release !! I couldn't believe it when i checked that but after some thinking, i can't remember one of my relation who doesn't own it, even my parents love and have it !Still waiting for "La ultima ola", his next album...

Free Music Review: A generational loud speaker ?

No promotional tour, no heavy rotation on MTV or radio, yet he sold millions copies, generated more than 60 reviews here and stayed almost 2 years in the French album charts with "Clandestino". That should speak enough for Manu Chao's Clandestino but i will nevertheless add some lines to his credit.Manu's a modest guy and like to hide his touching lyrics and beautiful and hypnotic music under toy noises and various samples. Missed! It's even better and contribute to create a very special atmosphere for each song despite a sense of fantastic cohesion of the whole album given by songs fading in and out in each others, common "gimmick" sentences or rythm patterns coming and going in different songs.
This album is a cure for the soul without contraindications. Do your life a favour, BUY IT (and don't copy it please it's not the usual commercial trash)!
It's 6 months i am waiting for the new album (just heard a song from this one which could be the 17th of "Clandestino"). I am running out of patience now, Manu, por donde saldra el sol ?

If you like music from around the world, you'll love this CD. Difficult to classify but mixes a taste of salsa, reggae, pop and social consciousness. Lyrics are in English Spanish & French. Great CD. I was working in Shanghai, China, when I heard Clandestino for the first time courtesy of a friend who'd discovered Manu Chao while backpacking through South America. Shanghai was blisteringly hot and the local police were giving me trouble, but with Clandestino playing I could easily transcend the everyday hassles of life in China and imagine a place where everyone is full of smiles and ready to dance. Now I've finally gotten my own copy! I'm still stuck at work but at least I can listen to Manu Chao's unique mix of international musical styles and daydream of escape anytime...
