Free Music Notes for Clandestino

Free Music Review: outstanding! the first voice of a new world.
Hit: 5 Stars

anyone who has given this album less than a five star rating has got to be kidding and the guy who has given it a one star rating had better go back to his kant and heidegger.

Free Music Review: Not terribly impressed
Hit: 3 Stars

I think the most impressive thing about this CD, and probably what garnered it a lot praise, is that Mr. Chao wrote songs in three different languages. It lends it a renaissance, worldly feel that I don't think it necessarily deserves. The melodies are simple with bare instrumental backing, and while sometimes they are catchy, I can't say I was just dying to listen to the CD again and again. Probably, as another reviewer mentioned, it would reward with further listening, but there wasn't enough there on the first listening to warrant my re-listening.

Free Music Review: Odd but charming album
Hit: 5 Stars

Manu Chao is a French singer, formerly of the rock band La Mano Negra. He was born in France of Spanish parents, and the songs on this cd are mostly sung in Spanish. Out of the 16 songs, 10 are Spanish, 1 is Portuguese, 2 are French, 1 is English, and 2 are half English and half Spanish.
La Mano Negra's style is basically French punk rock, but on this solo release Manu Chao's style has changed. This is basically a low-tech, acoustic album. It almost sounds like a friend is singing for you rather than like a highly-produced studio album. That said, it does have some rather unorthodox background sounds, including news broadcasts in Spanish and street noises.
I found this album charming. Many of the songs are highly memorable, and the eccentric presentation adds a lot to my enjoyment of the music. It definitely does not sound like every other album out there.
For those who care, the cd packaging includes the lyrics.

Free Music Review: This man knows the meaning of funk.
Hit: 4 Stars

There is an inescapable sense of romance you get imagining the vagabond life of Manu Chao. He travles the world strumming the guitar, making up pretty little tunes about the things he sees. Be they joyous or terrible, Manu finds an inner beauty in all events and infuses his experiences with love and humor to create a sexy gumbo of funky ditties that will make your mind dance... and your booty too.

Free Music Review: Crossover king
Hit: 5 Stars

Where else do you gather a nice blend of several languages, many differently influenced beats and a nice feeling to the whole package? Manu Chao of course. I had the unfortunate experience of finding out too late to see Manu Negra anywhere but Manu Chao's solo stuff is incredible. Speaking from the heart and from experience is what makes this grasp the listener and hear the stories he has to tell. Mixing between english, spanish, french and arabic he speaks to several groups of people all at once. Definitely do not pass on this album, you'll be closing off your mind to a great sound!
