Free Music Review: What can you say - Manu Chau is the real deal!
Hit: 5 Stars

The most original performer in what is now labeled Rock en Espanol - which is pretty goofy since his first band - Mano Negra was part of that whole French/Spanish rock movement that included Les Negresses Verites.

I loved Mano Negra's Clash inspired world rock - but Mano Chao's solo work is the stuff of genius. This CD is an aural painting that opens a whole new world for the listener. Sexy, soulful and thoughtful. Chao's music rates with Dylan, Young, Marley, - all the greats. A must buy for any true music lover.

Free Music Review: Clandestino? Maravilloso!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not sure how to describe this record's pastiche of Latin, Spanish, Carribean, Reggae, African, French and psychedelic music, and I don't mean to make it sound too exotic, because everything here is extremely accessible. Nor is it "rootsy" world music--in fact, it is as (post)modern a production as any Radiohead album, with its judicious use of samples and odd textures over more traditional instrumentation. It's not hard to pick up on the homage to Bob Marley, especially in his vocals and melodies, but I'm sure there are myriad influences I can't detect as well. I can say that there is not a weak track on this record--it is stupendous all the way through, and your favorites will change each day. If I had to pick a highlight it would be the first ten songs(!) And you hear traces of previous songs floating through later ones, revealing a coherency in the vision of the record. It is simultaneously a great party record and a great chill-out record. Manu Chao is a very gifted guy--check him out.

Free Music Review: one of my favorite CD's--I can't stop listening to it

other reviewers are absolutely right about this CD--it's hypnotizing--after I got it I just keep listening to it and just can't stop, it's so great.

Free Music Review: Some serious work!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved to travel by bus in Latin-America which I've done extensively when I lived in Venezuela. These two CD's are the closest thing that you'll get without actually doing it.

The flavors/smells, the funky radio ads, the mayhem at the stations, the local folks getting in the bus carrying chickens or pigs and a bottle of rum or "lava gallo" to share with you, their views on life...

Just a note: his origins are from Galicia, NW Spain (one of the celt nations), there are a lot of galician folk tunes mixed in there too.

Free Music Review: Shocked
Hit: 5 Stars

Clandestino is just plain FUN. Pop this album on & the world will just seem a bit more rosey. It is most definitely happy music. The first time I heard this album I felt compelled to sing along, especially to Welcome to Tijuana & Bongo Bong. The mutitude of layers really makes this a very interesting album to listen to.
