Free Music Notes for La Radiolina

Free Music Review: Great sound
Hit: 5 Stars

There's no doubt that Manu Chao evolutioned his sound, and still staying recongnizable and familiar to his crowd. Compared to "Ultima Estacion Esperanza" this production has a lot more emphasis on guitar and bass and less sampling, reminding us his days with Mano Negra. The lyrics remain political and melancholic.

Free Music Review: Manu the best
Hit: 5 Stars

Manu chao really blew it out of the water with la radiolina. "El hoyo" is my favorite. Viva Manu!

Free Music Review: Evolution of a Pan Latin Groovemaster
Hit: 4 Stars

When Manu Chao did a live set on KCRW a week before the release of "La Radiolina", Nic Harcourt observed that the new record has a more aggressive feel to it. Manu replied that in the six years since his last record, the world has changed a lot. The world too, has become more dangerous and aggressive.

Radiolina does have several songs that are more electric guitar driven. Another new element (at least from my recollection) from the opening track, is an electric banjo that gives the music an almost hillbilly Appalachian feel not present on the previous albums.

In addition to a fast paced guitar groove on several songs, Chao brings out his flamenco roots more overtly on "me llaman calle" and "La vida es una tombola/Si yo fuera Maradona".

It may just be synchronicity, as I bought Cindy Sherman's new retrospective book with this CD, or it may be a direct influence, but the song "Bleeding clown" may have been influenced by one of Cindy Sherman's photographs.

People complained about Manu's past records beginning to sound repetetive, even after just a few listens. Manu is fond of self cannibalization when writing songs. That technique worked quite well on his first two records, but it does get tiresome here. If there's a flaw to Radiolina, it's that he uses the same groove on nearly a half dozen songs. I remedied this by picking my favorite song in which he uses the same groove, and only transferring that song to my ipod. This is a different way of saying the album would have been just fine with 15 or 16 tracks instead of 21.

Manu Chao is usually lumped in with "world music". I hereby invent the term "Pan Latin Groove", as Manu skillfully blends Spanish music with other Latino styles from all over the globe.

While Radiolina does have a more aggressive feel to it on several songs, as with his past records, Manu infuses a heavy dose of angry politics. There's also a melancholia in his music (as there is in much of music in the vast Spanish/Portuguese diaspora). Ultimately, Manu also shares a message of hope in the song "Otro mundo" (other world), in which he sings he dreamed about a different and better world.

Overall, a more polished, mature sound; a CD I'd strongly recommend in spite of the repetitive groove on several songs.

Free Music Review: manu again.... cool!!!!!!!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am a BIG fan of Manu and I am very happy to see that after a long time he's back with a great album wich is a mixture of different lenguages, funny lyrics and great music, not an empty one but rather an album that you would be listening from the begining until the end and turning your player's repeat button on.
It is not as good as El Clandestino, but very close, to me that is the best album ever released by any author and I dont think that anybody, not even manu (and I really hope I am wrong with it), will ever release an album as good as that one. Still this album is very good, I am very happy with it, get it and see for yourself I believe you won't repent.
I hope manu considers coming back to Cuenca to give us another great concert, if so I'm on first row again to sing his new hits with him.
Now I'm going to write something in spanish which is my native language, I hope it is useful to somebody:
Luego de mucho tiempo Manu esta de vuelta con un gran album, otro de esos que quieres oir y oir de principio a fin, hay varios idiomas, letras divertidas y buena musica, te aseguro que no te arrepentiras si lo adquieres.

Free Music Review: God bless him!

I have a big problem with the Chao. I can listen to his songs forever without getting tired. If they were on the old vinyl, it would have worn out on me a million times.
This new album is more acoustical and melodic than previous releases, but his lyrics have also achieved more richness and depth. Clandestino and Esperanza are still the most played of my library, this will get the first spot....and please Manu, let's not wait another 6 years.
