Free Music Notes for El CantanteFree Music Review: Hooked Hit: 5 Stars
I have never really been a Jennifer Lopez fan, which is what initially stopped me from seeing the movie at the movie theatre. When the movie came out on HBO, I figured I would give it a chance, and I am so glad that I did. I fell in love with the movie and could not believe the excellent performances by both Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez!!! I became obsessive with the movie and found myself wanting to hear the music all of the time. I read some of the reviews in Amazon before I purchased the CD, and the one comment that convinced me to purchase it was that if you like salsa, you will love the CD.
I must say, I could not believe the negative comments that I read and felt that they were really unfair and harsh toward Marc Anthony. No one can act exactly like someone else without spilling over a bit of their own personality and emotions into a role, however, in this case he made Hector look and sound even better. He did one hell of a job and deserves a lot of credit. I could not think of anyone else who would have been more appropriate to play the role of Hector LaVoe than Marc Anthony. I think Hector would have been proud. Marc really gives Hector's music justice and brings so much passion to the screen. Hector was the salsa King in his day, and Marc Anthony is today's salsa KING!!!!! Thank you Marc!!
Free Music Review: Hector was the master then; Marc Now Hit: 5 Stars
The music in this CD sounds better than the original probably because of better acoustics in recording studios nowadays. Regardless, it sounds great. Like some other reviewer said, the more I hear this CD the more I like it. As you know, usually the original singer has the advantage. In this case it was Hector, so there could be no comparison. However, my greatest disappoinment was to hear Marc trying to sound like Hector and limiting his own awesome singing style which is very different but one of the best. What I wanted to hear was Marc's interpretation and soneo of these songs. I would like to hear Marc record other of Hector's songs with his own voice and his own style. Of course it would not be the same. But think of Hector trying to sing Ahora a Quien, Celos, Te Conozco Bien, or Hasta que te conoci. He would not match Marc's voice or soneos. Marc has also revived the music of Rafael Hernandez for younger generations.
Hector, Ismael,Ismael M., Ruben, Marvin, Cheo, Gilberto, and Marc are the salsa greats. For you salsa hardcores (like me) accept this reality and you would accept that this is a great CD.
BOTTOMLINE: This CD is great.
Free Music Review: Another brilliant cd from Marc @}->--- Hit: 5 Stars
I've been a fan of Marc Anthony's throughout the 90's before the Latin Pop explosion later in 1999/2000. He has the most superb voice and always sings with a lot of emotion and smoothness. You don't need to understand what he's singing about if you listen to the music and his voice - you can just feel what he's singing about.
He plays the role of Hector Lavoe in this movie - and he'd been wanting to make this movie for years. While I haven't seen the movie, I've already fallen in love with the music. It's beautiful. I think he's done a really good job here to not exactly match the talents of Lavoe, but to get close to his talent and put his own take on it. I really love Che Che Cole, El Día de Suerte and Aguanile. I love the whole cd, but these are my particular favourites.
This cd is my absolute new favourite that went straight onto my iPod and into the car too so I can listen to it everywhere. It's so amazing and you must do yourself and pick up a copy whether you are a fan of Marcs, Hectors or if you just love stunning Latin music. This is great. Can't wait to see the movie.
Free Music Review: Bravo! Hit: 5 Stars
One person says Marc Anthony did a bad job at imitating Lavoe, another says Marc should have been more like himself instead of imitating Lavoe. What do I say? I say that of course, this cd isn't going to be exactly like Lavoe, and it shouldn't be expected, because it's done by *another person*.
I loved this cd, except for the last song. It's Jennifer Lopez singing a slow one, and it wasn't in the movie, so it has no business being on the soundtrack.
Anywho, even though I love Hector Lavoe and his incredible talent, I'm a die hard Marc Anthony fan. Imho, he did a FANTASTIC job both acting and singing in this movie. It's definitely noticable that Marc Anthony is not singing as himself on this cd, but doing the best that he can to sing like Lavoe.
Take J-Lo off the cd, and it would be perfect.
Free Music Review: Excellent Musicianship; Great Vocals Hit: 5 Stars
I'm tired of bad-sport Hector Lavoe fans who cannot accept that anyone can even come close to challenging him.
Hector Lavoe was a master sonero, and he conveyed a sense of humor in his singing that was very unique. Marc Anthony can't touch him in these departments. However, Hector sometimes had an unpleasant nasal quality to his voice, and not much power.
Marc Anthony has a beautiful singing voice. He sings with power and intensity, but can also handle the vocal acrobatics.
The musicians on this CD are excellent, and the arrangements are hot!!! The more you listen to this CD, the more fun it is!
This should be just a starter for Hector Lavoe appreciation. Hector had a prolific career with LOTS of great material.
