Free Music Review: The Bammer Strikes Again

Maria Bamford's name comes up again and again when great comics name their favorite performers working today, and with good reason. Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome represents a great leap in her comedic development; listening to it back-to-back with her previous effort, How to Win! (a great album in its own right), I was floored by how much she matured in the space of just a few years. The material on UTS is much more developed, more insightful, more honest, and more confident: there's never a moment of fumbling or backing down from a joke. Bamford is now the performer she was always going to be and the material has a sense of inevitability to it. Like the greats of stand-up, it doesn't seem as though Maria developed the jokes; it seems as though they were always there, floating perfect in some Void of Hilarity, and she just happened to be the channel through which they expressed themselves. With this newfound self actualization of her talent, Maria Bamford joins the ranks of Patton Oswalt and Paul F. Tompkins as one of the most exciting comics working today.
