I admit I am an amateur opera listener and have not heard that many different recordings yet. However, for novices and longtime opera lovers alike, I would highly recommend this cd. Callas'dramatic voice, incredible range and power, and her superb expression make her one of my favorite opera singers that I have heard. She conveys the emotion of the arias she sings so beautifully; she really tells the story of the operas when she sings. Callas is more than just a pretty voice; she possesses incredible control, range, and expression. I might add that for someone just beginning to listen to opera, this cd contains gorgeus renditions of some of the most well known romantic arias. I bought this recording because I'm studying several of Callas' roles presented on this CD. My teacher was taught by Maria Callas' teacher herself, Elvira de Hidalgo. She made me listen to this unique, beautiful voice to learn how a phrase can be spun, how pacing works, how melodies can flow through a voice without being abused for showing off one's technique. As a vocal student I advise you to buy this and to listen to this vocal wonder who could do alto-arias and go up to a soprano-F!!!! A lesson for singers, critics and lovers of classical music. With her I discovered the true world of belcanto without tricks and gimmicks but dazzling technique and interpretation.***Emilia***

I've read all these reviews and all the nasty remarks have been written on the same day by the same person. What a sad life he must lead if he thinks he can drag down a genius like Callas by posting one-star reviews in a row. Ignore these. Read the rest of the reviews and mark how positive and just they are. Us Callas-Fans are very protective of our diva just like the Sutherland-Fans. But instead of voting Sutherland down we'll vote up Maria so that the truth be known. Enjoy Callas' voice. And if you don't, think again. She will grow on you like fine wine. Extremely rare.A beautiful tone,nobody will ever have this evergreen voice again.Just listen to each passage and sound.A determinated voice,always under control even when she shouted.Music is somehow like Art,there is no explanation.Not even a commercial kind of music.Music is a universal language.It's the same to all.
Callas communicated her love and passions thru' the music.You can feel it.She is the MUSIC.She had brought the lyric's opera singers into modern era.
This album is great and at a reasonable price.
I listened to the arias over and over again.Just listen to her soul and to Callas.

I've always liked Callas. She has a unique, instantly recognizable voice, full of intensity and passion that makes whatever she is singing come fully alive. There are probably more beautiful voices than hers, but few can match her spellbinding ability to convey emotion and capture the listener. This is an exceptional album of some of her best arias with superb sound quality that includes 14 pages of notes and photographs.
The Callas connoisseur will not be disappointed, and the novice can't find a better introduction to one of the most distinctive and captivating voices ever to grace the opera stage.
