Free Music Review: A Great Comeback Album
Hit: 5 Stars

The past year or so has been the most turbulent of Mariah Carey's life with her emotional breakdown, death of her father and poor record sales. It has, however, also proved to be the most inspirational. Mariah Carey was the biggest selling female artist of the 1990's clocking up a staggering 15 US No.1's. She wasn't going to give up and go down the pan like some has-been. Mariah has spent the majority of 2002 recording this superb comeback album Charmbracelet. Since her transition into Hip-Hop/R'n'B with 1997's Butterfly, Mariah has been losing a lot of fans - she hopes to recapture these by going back to basics with her trademark power ballads which made her an international superstar. While this album won't go to No.1 in the UK (they usually barely make the Top 10), I am hoping it will in the US. I really hope that Mariah makes it back on top where she belongs and begins selling millions of records like she used to...

Charmbracelet begins with Through The Rain. The first cut from this new album, Through The Rain is a superb power ballad similar to that of Hero, showcasing Mariah's excellent vocal range at every chance it gets. The song peaked at No.8 in the UK and has been a huge hit all over Europe. Boy (I Need You) features Cam'ron and is brilliantly light-heared with some sweet and sugary vocals and some relaxing beats. The sample of "Boy, boy, boy...oh boy!" is fantastic. This has to be released as a single - an album highlight! The One is up next. Dubbed to be the next single from Charmbracelet, The One is another brilliant mid-tempo R'n'B ballad with some great lyrics and beats. Track 4 is Yours (9/10). This ballad shows Mariah doing what she does best - belting out the power ballads with that stunning multi-octave voice! The song has some sweet lyrics and relaxing vocals. Track 5 is You Got Me featuring Jay-Z and Freeway (9/10). This up-tempo R'n'B hit has the potential to be a single. The song may be up-tempo but is very relaxing and soothing. Track 6 is I Only Wanted (10/10). This is another superb mid-tempo ballad with a beat that sounds like a dripping tap - yes, it's true! However foolish this may sound, it is surprisingly effective and makes for one of Charmbracelet's best songs along with a brilliant Spanish guitar. The song also has what sounds like swaying trees or rushing water which results in a more tropical and natural sound. Track 7 is Clown (8/10). Probably the worst song on the album, Clown doesn't really have a big impact on you. The lyrics seem to be a bit confused and the beat is all over the place - not my favourite. Track 8 is My Saving Grace (10/10). Now this is more like it, Mariah! This phenomenal ballad is absolutely breathtaking with its brilliant lyrics, classy piano intro and Mariah's indescribable vocals - she reaches new heights towards the end...see for yourself and be blown away!

Track 9 is You Had Your Chance (9/10). This is a very good mid-tempo R'n'B number from Ms Carey. The lyrics are good and are a welcome return to Mariah's girl-power side while the bassline is very funky - definitely toe-tapping material! Track 10 is Lullaby (10/10). This is a brilliant song from Mariah with some excellent beats and lyrics. Mariah's voice is on top-form and the song has an overall production factor that is nothing short of splendid. Track 11 is Irresistible (West Side Connnection). This superb R'n'B number is destined to be a future smash hit single. It is undeniably the most instantly catchy song on Charmbracelet, and has a superb rap by Ice Cube. It begins with him rapping the lines, "Slipping, sliding, gliding, low-riding," before breaking out with a bouncy beat followed by a smooth and sharp bassline - definitely an album highlight. Track 12 is Subtle Invitation (10/10). This song follows a similar style to that of some songs from last years' Glitter. The bassline is very 80's and the chorus is very catchy. Track 13 is Bringin' On The Heartbreak (10/10). Without a doubt my absolute favourite song on the album, this cover of Def Leppard's classic surpasses the original with flying colours. The lyrics are just so heartfelt and Mariah's voice goes into orbit as she reaches those all important high notes - the kind that only dogs can hear! Many people have stated that Mariah has lost the ability to reach this level of vocal supremacy, yet it is evident from the ending of this song that this is definitely not the case. I hope she decides to release it as a single because it simply would fly to the top of the charts worldwide. Track 14 is Sunflowers For Alfred Roy (10/10). Mariah's father recently passed away and this is her tribute to him. The song is very short, but makes a big impact with its brilliant lyrics and superb enchantment. Track 15 is Through The Rain (Remix) featuring Kelly Price and Joe (9/10). This is a more R'n'B and up-tempo remix of the original power ballad. The rap is great and the way the lyrics are changed to be more catchy is very clever.

OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

With Charmbracelet receiving rave reviews - critically and comercially - it's just a matter of time before this album flies to No.1 all over the world and lands Mariah back on top of her throne. If you're a fan of Mariah's slower material (Emotions, MTV Unplugged, Music Box, Daydream), then this album is definitely for you. If you like Mariah's more R'n'B material (Butterfly, Rainbow, Glitter), then this album is also for you - Charmbracelet is a combination on both, but more so for the ballads than R'n'B material. Charmbracelet is stunning, like the artist - buy it now from Amazon.com!

Charmbracelet Poster

MARIAH CAREY Charmbracelet (2002 Colombian 15-track CD album includes Through The Rain Remix featuring Kelly Price and Joe picture sleeve)
Mariah Carey's ninth album has been touted as her comeback album, coming as it does after the belly flop that produced the overwrought soundtrack to her ill-fated film, Glitter. With Charmbracelet, Carey goes out of her way to fix all those aesthetic glitches, tempering the overblown vocals, simpering lyrics, and uninspired funk covers of her last album and returning to what she does best--showcasing her magnificent five-octave voice and pillaging her lift history for inspiration. After her breakup with superstar Luis Miguel, MTV meltdown, hospitalization for exhaustion, and the death of her father, Carey had a lot of emotional baggage to sift through. She has and, as a result, has created an inspired and diverse 15-song opus that finds her skipping from an impassioned Aretha Franklin-like gospel ("Saving Grace") to an impish cover of Def Leppard's power ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak." Though he's not mentioned by name, rapper Eminem is given a pointed drubbing on "Clowns" for hinting in the press and in his own song "Superman" of a relationship with Carey. There hasn't been such a compelling musical soap opera since Carly Simon's '70s roman à clef, "You're So Vain." However, the disc's most inspiring moment comes on "Sunflowers for Alfred Roy," a wistful elegy for her father that recounts his final days in his hospital room. This is a stunning return to form for Carey. --Jaan Uhelszki
