Free Music Review: The birth of THE Mariah carey (The Queen of Vocals)

There's a reason why I call Mariah the queen of vocals and that's simply because other female vocalists just do not have the style, gusto, & technique that she has. They simply cannot compete, sure they may have the bigger voice but they just aren't better singers in any mention of the word. It takes more than a good voice and defiantly more than a soulful one to be an artist/performer. First off she has amazing pipes (As we all know) that allow her to pull off some of the most difficult vocals ever, Secondly good (though Sometimes a little overrated)songwriting, and lastly that infamous High-note/Whistle register that brings visions of Past soul legend Minnie Riperton (Of "Lovin' You" fame) To put it mildly Mariah's voice was just made for singing.
To start off we have her first Single "Vision of Love". When I first started listening to Mariah I didn't have much to go on, all I had ever heard from her was a Luther Vandross duet ("Endless love") & This song, So this song is very dear to my heart. All that aside this is simply one of her all time best singles & even songs recorded. A vocal masterpiece (in my opinion) I never get tired of hearing this Song. The song stands on it's own in the vocal department, though i must point out The intro comes on like an old Decrepit alien spaceship preparing for lift off, Once the voice starts it's pure heaven. Mariah's tone at this early period in her career was just perfect! (Not too high/low) Towards the end she starts riffing up a storm and does these runs... never ceases to amaze me.
The Rest of the songs are all above average R&B/Adult Contemporary/Pop (Even the just okay songs!!!) With the best tracks being Track 1 followed by an excellent string of 5 star songs from tracks 4-11.
"Someday" is a PERFECT Pop song & I love it to death!!!. Mariah switches gears and gets angry for once in her songs. The song about a lover who threw her away: Mariah gets back by taking sweet musical revenge. The lyrics though a bit cliched (Too much silly rhyming) are a perfect example of how much fun a pop song can be.
The other three dance songs are all great in different ways. "Sent from up above" is in no way filler. The lyrics are powerful & Spiritual ("Unending passion/somehow the fire never dies/What we share is everlasting/Love without demise/He made it happen/placed so much joy into our hands/What we dreamed has finally happened/Heaven took command!) and the vocals on this and the ENTIRE album are among her most inspired. Towards the end when she growls "Must a been sent/Must a been sent/aaah yeah yeah" you can tell she's practically dying to break her soul free. "You need me" is just as the title suggests Mariah at her most uncompassionate, I always found it hard to believe that a person every one says is so fluffy would write this song. ("Baby you can turn away & leave/But I know that you'll keep coming right back to me!!!") A rocker like track Mariah sings behind an electric guitar & Sings so coldly it leaves me in disbelief. "Prisoner" is another great track where mariah shows she wont take any [...] from any man. ("I'm just not the girl You thought I was/Not gonna be a prisoner of your love") Everytime I hear this track I wonder what would it be like if i were alive in 1990 driving in my car at 10 P.m through a dark tunnel & coming out to encounter a city skyline. The rap that Mariah does isn't great but it shows her personality.
The rest of the album is divided into mostly heartbreaking Ballads sung passionatly & filled with a very believable vocal, with "Love takes time" being the best of the set. This is another one of my all time favorites. (I Own all but two of her albums) Mariah takes an ol'skool sounding ballad and just tears it to shreads singing it flawlessly. This is the Mariah Carey I love to hear!!!
"All in your Mind" & "Alone in love" are a 1,2 punch combo. "All in your mind" is one of my favorites. The lyrics should be noted as brillance. ("Come closer u seem so far away/Theres something I know you need to say/I feel your emotions when i look in your eyes/Your silence is whispering mis-understandings/Theres so much you need to realize/You'll feel my emotions when you look in my eyes) perfect imagery & metaphore. (Mariah Always Writes or co-writes all her songs) The vocals are perfectly Subdued giving it a very ghostly effect. "Alone in love" is done in rather the same way. Perfect metaphorical poetry (Swept me away/but now im lost in the dark/set me on fire but now im left with a spark/alone you get me in the haze/i'm lost inside the maze/I guess i'm all alone in love) this songs lyrics blend the idea of the emotional with the physical, You feel like you can touch her anger & breathe her sadness. Perfect!!!
The last of the ballads are "Vanishing" (5 star) & a pretty boring, though extremly vocally inspiring "I Don't wanna cry". These two songs are the dimmest spots on the album, But you can't hate them. Mariah puts so much Believeablity into these songs you must pay attention. "Vanishing" is the best out of the two & has a vocal that makes it 5 star. "IDWC" is a vocally amazing track in all counts, But I always am more amazed at the lyrics. ("Every moment were together it's just breaking me down/I know we swore it was forever but it hurts too much to stay around") The lyrics though a little too easy capture an erroding relationship excellently.
That leaves "There's got to be a way". This is one of only two tracks I deem 4 Stars. (And it's not even that bad) Compared to the other songs it just couldn't stand on it's own. A track about social commentary. Mariah gives it her all & takes it ta' church, But beyond that it's just average & then theres that cheesy "I want world peace" thing that makes ya wanna throw up!!! (Isn't there enough to Shaaaaarrrre!!! LOL!!)
In conclusion this has got to be one of her all time best albums. Of all the albums of her's, I would waste the least time popping this & "Emotions" in. This is what a debut should sound like:Inspiring,Vocally promising,And well crafted.
This album will NEVER not be in my collection!!!
