The album cover alone looks so freakin' stupid. And her behind is airbrushed with the rainbow logo. Stupid. As she gets older she looks and acts younger. Also, her songs don't have any meaning unlike Madonna's music. Mariah's music sounds the same. Oh I'm in love and than I'm out of love. And then songs about shaking your booty. I'll lean toward Madonna anyday cuz her sound is always changing and Madonna can dance, she can play the guitar, she writes her own music, and there's a lot of artistic meaning in her songs.Free Music Review: 3 1/2 stars. Although I gave "E=MC2" the same rating, this album is better.

It is obvious that Mariah Carey had much she wanted to say to Tommy Matolla on her "Butterfly" and "Rainbow" albums and she said a lot of things that were clearly directed toward him on both discs; some of these things were blatant and some were more indirect. I'm glad that she found some way to get back at him and I'm sure a burden has been lifted off of her for doing this. I enjoyed this album, though it lacks innovation and any type of true creativity. Perhaps the most creative aspect of this album were the fresh melodies and maybe a few lines from songs here and there. Nevertheless, this is a solid album and worth adding to the music collection.
Guest appearances are many. We have Usher, Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Da Brat, N Sync and Snoop helping Mariah out. Mariah Carey can do a wonderful album without the help of any guests, but maybe she just loves collaborations. Although each of the aforementioned artists have talent, they didn't add any true spice to this disc. Mariah could have done more vocally on this album because, at her best, her vocals are amazing. Here, she gives her listener just enough. "Petals" is an example. This song is very pretty but it would have been more effective had she given better vocals. This song is slightly eerie, but the lyrics are quite deep and it is easily one of the best moments on the album. "Crybaby" features Snoop and this song is another good moment here. The beat and melody are really nice. Mariah and Snoop do a nice job, too. This is a shame but "Did I Do That?" samples Mystical, and the best parts of the song are the parts which feature him. The lyrics and delivery on this song are pretty weak. "Heartbreaker" and its remix are good songs, but not among Mariah's best. Fortunately, she administers a few high notes for us octave lovers. "Can't Take That Away" is one of her most introspective songs to date because she is directly speaking to Tommy Matolla on this track. She is really pouring her heart out vocally and lyrically here, and boy is she effective. This song can and will bring tears to your eyes.
This album will set many a mood for those who own it. Some songs will make you dance, some will make you sit and think, and some will make you cry. I have heard some of her bigger fans say that this is one of her worst albums but it is not. I like it and I also recommend it.

Free Music Review: Mariah's midlife crisis, about 20 years too early.

By the time Mariah Carey released this album in 1999, she was no longer a pop star so much as an R&B star. Her sales dwindled a bit, but her career was far from over. However, when she released Rainbow, it seemed that she may have been heading into a slump.
Mariah Carey as an R&B singer was not a tough sell, and for the most part, she pulled it off. But here, she tries to be a teeny-bopper pop singer, similar to the Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Backstreet Boys types that were dominating the charts and radio at the time. It would not be that bad, but if you factored in the fact that she was pushing 30, looked like an airhead on the album cover, and was singing about subjects not exactly serious in nature, she just embarrassed herself here. I think this here is similar to many 70s stars who released disco albums when that was the hot style.
There's a lot wrong on here, but she did do some good. "Heartbreaker" is irresistibly catchy and fun, "Bliss" has some fabulous singing and sets a sexy mood, "Petals" is very moving lyrically and musically, and her duet with 98 Degrees and Joe on "Thank God I Found You," while forgettable, is a great pop product if anything was at the time.
This is not Mariah's best album by any stretch of the imagination. Like many released from that time, this was an album for the times rather than something to listen to for years and years. Most of the tracks on here are guilty pleasures at best, and forgettable filler at worst. At her worst, Mariah is better than some at their best, but people expect better from her.

This definitely isn't her strongest work, but this CD will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first CD of hers that I owned. It was going to go in the trash or something until I took it off of someone's hands and I'm glad I did!

Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now) An excellent cover, IMHO (in my honest opinion)

She doesn't overdo it with special guests here. I mean there are 4 but I think that it was still balanced enough to not drag the album down. I wouldn't fully recommend this over some of her other CDs though. Buy the following ones before this one:
