Free Music Review: Not So Broken
Hit: 5 Stars

I had heard of Ms. Marianne from her countless downfalls in the press in the 60s - once a high octave diva singing Rolling Stones covers but all that changed with this 1979 album.

I first discovered Broken English after reading about it in one of the Women In Rock books which talked about the song "Why'd You Do It" and once I read the great review I immediately found a copy. On and off my CD player since then, I had to take this out for a spin this week and it's just as good as I remember it. Gone is the sweet Faithfull of the 60s replaced with punkish dance rock, a cigarette filled voice and attitude personified. All you have to do is listen to the moody "The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan" about a mother's breakdown, or the aforementioned kiss off - "Why'd you do it she said/ why'd you let her suck ... well you'll buy it and you'll know the obscenity filled rest, she can even cover John Lennon with ease and all of that is only the beginning to this great album.

Free Music Review: Marianne Combines Her Artistry With Her 33 Years In '79
Hit: 5 Stars

Marianne Faithfull makes often "sad" music with extraordinary scope. You might say this is "sad-mad" music released during the punk era that still has its dark power all of these years later. Every cut has a power of its own, from the insistent take on alienation (Broken English), to the druggy lament (What's The Hurry)--to the sad story of a housewife gone mad (Ballad of Lucy Jordan), to the stop you in your tracks gritty take on a lover done wrong (Why'd Ya Do It). Not for the meek, but if anyone has ever wanted a little music accompaniment to get that internalized rage out--this music will help you do it! She gives us a treat with new surprises on every release, whether it is her own songs, folk, rock, punk, old standards, or cabaret...an artist to be treasured.

Free Music Review: A true diva. She is to Europe what Patti Smith is to America
Hit: 5 Stars

People initially explore Marianne's music because of her connection to The Rolling Stones, which, though admittedly cool, ( I worship The Stones more than most),always seems to pale her own musical prowess. Marianne is one of those rare artists that can blend the cadence of pop music with darkness, durge, anger, poetry - and through it all shed some clarity and (dare I say) light into an otherwise dreary existence. She is balsy, pensive, outspoken, ardent and has the vision and talent that seems elusive in the artists of today. This record is undoubtedly her most raw and most powerful. It is the zenith of her career.

Free Music Review: A great synthesis of late 70's rock
Hit: 5 Stars

Marianne Faithful made her real stamp on the music world with this album 25 years ago.
with her characteristic raspy voice and angry and cynical lyrics she brought out such rock hits as the famous country-style Ballad of Lucy Jordan , the introspective Guilt , the protest song Broken English , the eerie Witches Song , the fast-paced rocker Brain Drain, her version of the John Lennon hit Working Class Hero and the expletive-filled song of fury at infidelity , Why D'ya Do It?.
A great synthesis of late 70's rock . If you love good rock with a sharp edge , you have to have this.
